- Description
- In this collection of essays, contributors explore the construction of women as homemakers and the erasure of household labor from the middle-class home in popular representations of housework. They concentrate on such matters as the impact of second-wave feminism on families and gender relations: of popular culture—especially in film, television, magazines, and advertising—on our views of what constitutes home life and gender relations: and of changing views of sexuality and masculinity within the domestic sphere.

- Description
- Catherine Driscoll begins by identifying a genealogy of 'girlhood' or 'feminine adolescence,' and then argues that both 'girls' and 'culture' as ideas are too problematic to fulfill any useful role in theorizing about the emergence of feminine adolescence in popular culture. She relates the increasing public visibility of girls in western and westernized cultures to the evolution and expansion of theories about feminine adolescence in fields such as psychoanalysis, sociology, anthropology, history, and politics. Presenting her argument as a Foucauldian genealogy, Driscoll discusses the ways in which young women have been involved in the production and consumption of theories and representations of girls, feminine adolescence, and the 'girl market.'

- Description
- The author explores representations of mother-daughter relationships in popular media over the last 60 years, focusing on the ideologies of those representations and their connection to social movements. She deconstructs many psychological 'truths' about the mother-daughter relationship in order to reveal the ideological agendas behind them. Walters covers film, women's magazines, television sitcoms, and novels. She is generous to the reader of psychoanalytic discourse, explaining in simple language these theories mean. A new feminist psychology in which self-development is measured by specific relationships and not by a woman's ability to let go of her mother and enter a world of male-identification.

- Description
- Analysis of the role of commercial television in the sexual culture of the 1970s in the US. Levine explores sex-themed made-for-TV movies: female sex symbols such as the stars of Charlie’s Angels and Wonder Woman: the humor of variety shows (The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, Laugh-In), sitcoms (M*A*S*H, Three’s Company) and game shows (Match Game): and the proliferation of rape plots in daytime soap operas. She also describes the sexual topics that were barred from the airwaves. Along with program content, Levine describes the economic motivations of the television industry, the television production process, regulation by the government and the tv industry, and audience responses.
