- Description
- In this philosophical monograph on forgiveness Norlock urges scholars to attend to gender when analyzing and recommending forgiveness in practice. She demonstrates that while many academics find the concept of forgiveness both complex and fascinating, they seldom pay attention to the fact that issue of forgiveness intersect with those of gender in many crucial ways. By redefining forgiveness and what constitutes as an act of forgiveness, Norlock encourages readers to consider new questions about the advisability of trying to have a single, universal set of conditions for forgiveness because of the multidimensional nature of its practice and application.

- Description
- In this book David Stamos wants to question whether and to what extent evolutionary biology shines light on the big questions debated in the humanities and social sciences. The main theme in the book is the debate between evolutionary explanations and what has come to be known as the Standard Social Science Model. This model is a way of looking at human nature that is commonly found in sociology, behaviorism in psychology, cultural anthropology, Marxism, women's studies, and gay studies. Stamos examines topics of race, sex, gender, the nature of language, religion, ethics, knowledge, consciousness and ultimately, the meaning of life from different perspectives.

- Description
- In this study Budin demonstrates that sacred prostitution, the sale of a person's body for sex in which some or all of the money earned was devoted to a deity or a temple, did not exist in the ancient world. Reconsidering the evidence from the ancient Near East, the Greco-Roman texts, and the Early Christian authors, Budin shows that the majority of sources that have traditionally been understood as pertaining to sacred prostitution actually have nothing to do with this institution. The few texts that are usually invoked on this subject are, moreover, terribly misunderstood. Furthermore, contrary to many current hypotheses, the creation of the myth of sacred prostitution has nothing to do with notions of accusation or the construction of a decadent, Oriental 'Other.' Instead, the myth has come into being as a result of more than 2,000 years of misinterpretations, false assumptions, and faulty methodology.

- Description
- Storied Selves focuses on feminist Witches and their constructions of identities through the use of opposition and speculation as technologies of identity, particularly (post)colonial, maternal, and holistic identities. Through these identity formations, feminist Witches are invested in changing consciousness to create a just and sustainable world - an act that is fundamental to their practices of magic. The analysis draws from the two major North American traditions of feminist Witchcraft: Dianic and Reclaiming. Novels analyzed in the book are: Barbara Walker's Amazon, Cynthia Lamb's Bridid's Charge, and Starhawk's 'The fifth sacred thing'.

- Description
- Looking at painting and sculpture from the fourteenth through the eighteenth centuries, this work focuses on the symbolism of the female breast to open a view of Western European history over four centuries. Margaret Miles finds that while in 1350 the Virgin's bare breast represented nourishment and loving care, God's provision for the Christian, by 1750, artistic representations of the breast were either erotic or medical. The breast had lost its meaning as a religious symbol. But how did the breast, and nakedness more generally, lose the ability to represent human bodies as site and symbol of religious subjectivity and commitment? To explore this phenomenon, Miles engages in a wide-ranging investigation of the social, cultural, and religious circumstances within which a religious symbol came to be thoroughly 'mastered' by erotic and medical meanings.
