- Description
- This book is based on over 100 oral histories gathered from women from a variety of racial, ethnic, and geographical backgrounds. Buss analyzes this body of work, identifying common themes in women's lives and resistance that unite the oral histories she has gathered. From the beginning, her work has shed light on the inseparable, compounding effects of gender, race, ethnicity, and class on women's lives, what is now commonly called intersectionality. The book is structured thematically, with each chapter analyzing a concept that runs through the oral histories, e.g., agency, activism, religion.

- Description
- Markens takes on one of the most important issues on the fertility front--surrogate motherhood--in a book that illuminates the culture wars that have erupted over new reproductive technologies in the United States. In an analysis of legislative responses to surrogacy in the states of New York and California, Markens explores how discourses about gender, family, race, genetics, rights, and choice have shaped policies aimed at this issue. She examines the views of key players, including legislators, women's organizations, religious groups, the media, and others. In a study that finds ideological agreement among those with opposing views of surrogate motherhood, Markens challenges common assumptions about our responses to reproductive technologies and at the same time offers a fascinating picture of how reproductive politics shape social policy.

- Description
- These essays provide an accessible presentation of contemporary feminism and study of religion and reveal how feminism has affected religious institutions, theology and individual religious/spiritual practice. They describe the connections between the feminist movement from the early 1970s and religious studies as they have developed in the U.S. since then. Readings range from academic analyses to accounts of personal decision-making and struggle. It includes first-person and imaginative literature along with historical and analytical pieces from such authors as Jacquelyn Grant, Kwok Pui-Lan, Carol Christ, and Judith Plaskow. Multi-cultural and multi-generational representation from established voices and Third-Wave feminists. It includes three pieces by Muslim writers, four by African Americans, four by Jewish feminists, three by Latinas, and two by Asian Americans. These readings illustrate how women from different backgrounds have struggled to reconcile loyalties to their ethnic and religious communities with criticism of the status and treatment of women with those communities' religious traditions

- On the fiftieth anniversary of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, Gregory evaluates the progress towards the full implementation of one of the law’s key provisions: discrimination in the workplace. He looks at key litigation as the law has come to include discrimination based on more than just race, but on gender, age, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. From the segregationist policies of the past to lingering workplace oppression in the form of sexual harassment, age discrimination, and religious conflicts, the places we work have always been the scenes of some of our greatest civil rights battles. This study debates discrimination of all kinds and sheds light on the cultural tensions we grapple with in America. Gregory also looks at the broader history of oppression suffered, recognized, and overcome, in the 50 years since this country passed its Civil Rights Act.

- Description
- On April 26th 2015, when radical Islamist opposition forces in Syria announced the 'Great Attack' on Aleppo, young women of various ethnicities and religions backgrounds sought refuge in Le Pont gallery. They were mostly former participants of Art Camping, a collaborative art project initiated by Le Pont in responsive to the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in Aleppo in 2012. This book documents the photo sessions Issa Touma, photographer and director of the gallery, held at Le Pont during the week of the 'Great Attack', like a last message from Aleppo. It tells the story of a group of girls in their customary dressing, stating their fears during the crises, scared about losing either their life or lifestyle.

She examined the entire spectrum of early nineteenth-century women's groups - Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish: African American and white: middle and working class - to illuminate the ways in which race, religion, and class could bring women together in pursuit of common goals or drive them apart.
