- Description
- After 30 years ‘Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women’ the authors of this book have put the implementation of the provisions in the Convention to the test both in modern and traditional societies. In addition, some chapters pay attention to issues that are not contained in the treaty itself but that greatly impact the realization of women’s human rights, such as gender mainstreaming, gender-based violence, and corruption. The strengths and weaknesses, and the future potential of the Convention as well as the work of its monitoring body are analyzed and compared to other human rights treaties and organs. With contributions by Margreet de Boer, Martine Boersma, Marjolein van den Brink, Fons Coomans, Tilly Draaisma, Cees Flinterman, Gerard-René de Groot, Sille Jansen, Menno T. - Description
- This UN policy brief focuses on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on gender equality and women's rights. It looks at four thematic areas: economy, health, unpaid care work and gender-based violence. .The economic impacts of the pandemic are especially felt by women and girls who are earning and saving less, having insecure jobs or living near to poverty. The health of women is impacted by the reallocation of resources and priorities, including sexual and reproductive health services. The report states that unpaid care work, mainly performed by women, has increased with children staying at home and older persons who need more help. Besides, as a consequence of the 'lockdown' many women experience domestic violence. Suggestions for national policies imply including women and women’s organizations in all COVID-19 decision making processes, realizing an inclusive care economy and designing socio-economic plans with focus on women and girls.

- Description
- This report examines the relationship between gender and violent extremism and terrorism. The report assesses how gendered approaches to policy and practices relating to preventing violent extremism (PVE) and counter-terrorism (CT) can reduce inequalities. Its aim is to understand how, for example, the status of women and men features in their motivations for joining extremist groups, as well as their roles in and the recruitment patterns of such groups, so to develop effective prevention measures. The report reviews selected global policy frameworks on gender, PVE and CT, and discusses how they could further enhance responses to violent extremism and terrorism. Recommendations for relevant CT and PVE stakeholders on gender like governments and civil society organisations are provided.
