- Description
- 'What author wants to work towards in this thesis is a problematization of a kind of relating in terms of recognition and categorization in order to work towards a different mode of relating to what is new and other: a relating that is no longer appropriating or fixing of what it relates to but a relating is characterized by an ‘openness’ towards what is different. The turn to the notion of the unimaginable is a means by which she tries to envision the kind of relating to the new and the other. What is unimaginable cannot be appropriated in familiar terms: the unimaginable can not be explained or described. As soon as we do, it turns into what is imaginable. This is what inspires the different relating towards the new that is proposed in this thesis. In order to provoke a more open and generous approach towards difference, the main question this thesis concentrates on is how to envision a different relating towards the new by means of an ethics of the unimaginable.'

- Description
- In sub-Saharan Africa, the discipline of women’s and gender studies has made dramatic inroads into the academy through the development of degree-granting undergraduate and graduate programs, the creation of research centers and institutes, and the growth of African feminist theory. Using Uganda as a case study, we can look to the oldest program of its kind in Africa to trace the birth of the discipline on the continent. The history of women’s and gender studies in Uganda speaks to ways in which the discipline in the Global South has, since its inception, been entrenched in transnational feminism and an intersectional curriculum rooted in indigenous feminisms.

- Description
- Author investigates areas of knowledge production in contemporary queer-feminist punk countercultures in/from the US and draws a connection from countercultural accounts to academic anti-social queer theory. Based on the thesis that queer-feminist punk–countercultures, bands, musicians, writers and organizers–can be understood as a political movement, their productions—lyrics, writing, sound and performances—will be seen as a form of queer-feminist activism and agency. The main argument developed in the article is that queer-feminist punk countercultural agents do not only engage with queer and feminist politics, as well as academic theory, but also produce queer-feminist political theory—a more or less coherent set of ideas to analyze, explain and counter oppressive social structures, as well as explicit and open violence and oppression.

- Description
- 'Specifically, psychological and feminist theoretical frameworks were used from a national Dutch domestic violence campaign debuted in 2012 to determine the situation and treatment of domestic violence and long-term psychological effects in the Netherlands. Interviews with experts of domestic violence and one oral history with a survivor of domestic violence, the perceptions of mental health, domestic violence, and the intersection of the two were explored. There was agreement between literature, experts, and the survivor that mental health is not very valued and respected in Dutch society, as well as that domestic violence continues to remain a taboo subject. However, when the intersection is considered, there is a discrepancy: literature and experts perceive that there has been an increase in awareness and knowledge this intersection over the past ten years and resultantly, the psychology of survivors is well understood and valued.: the experience of the survivor shows this is not always true. The lack of knowledge is argued to be a direct effect and perpetuation of the physically-focused awareness campaigns. Suggestions for getting out of this problematic cycle are offered.'

- Since Susan Faludi published her book with the same title in 1991 the term 'backlash' has become an often used and popular term in feminist analyses and representations of women in popular culture along with the term 'postfeminism'. Author explores how these terms in feminist theorizing might offer ways to open up a debate around feminism.

- Description
- The metaphors of voice in the discourses of feminisms as articulated by Judith Fetterley, Kaja Silverman, Julia Kristeva, and Hélène Cixous are being traced. Mikko Keskinen, assistant professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland, analises the presuppositions of their vocal or sound imagery, paying special attention to the implications of the essentialism/constructivism opposition. Moreover, in spite of their differences in cultural background, period, and main area of study, the four theorists to be read are, as it were, within earshot from each other, centering, whether anglo- or francophone, around the phónè, the voice.
