- Description
- 'Between 1975 and 1995, a total of four world conferences on women took place under the sponsorship of the United Nations. These mega events were accorded a prominent place in the International/global women’s movement. This paper argues that we need to make a distinction between these two kinds of global organizing for gender equality. The former were sponsored by an international bureaucracy whereas the latter was started by women activists. Clarifying the difference helps to recognize the unique challenges posed by the world conferences for activists of the international/global women’s movement in the following aspects: dealing with logistical challenges, setting global priorities, coordinating international lobbying, and pushing for national implementation. Drawing on personal accounts, organizational records and United Nations documents, the paper explores how women activists adapted to the challengesand what lessons they offered for transnational activism in general.'

- Description
- This study is an analysis of the relationship between the enrolment of women in higher education and literacy level of women with their representation in governance and the workforce in India. India shows a negative trend concerning women entering the workforce despite their increasing literacy rate and GER of women in higher education. In the Indian parliament, only 14.36 % of elected representatives in the lower house (The Lok Sabha) are women in the year 2020. These statistics raise an important question on whether the efforts taken to empower women are yielding the intended results in terms of their equity in workforce and governance.

- Description
- The extent of differences in roles between men and women in Kosova is examined. Kosovar men devote 57 percent of their leisure time to earned income activities (i.e., agriculture, other self-employed, and hired), and only 4 percent to housekeeping. Kosovar women, however, devote 14 percent of their time to earned income activities and 65 percent to housekeeping. There are differences across Kosova's ethnic groups, with much less rigid gender roles among ethnic Serbian than is true for ethnic Albanians. Rigidly defined gender roles result in significant inefficiencies in the economy. Ethnic Serbian Kosovars have significantly higher incomes and lower incidences of poverty than their ethnic Albanian counterparts.

- Description
- Author analysed the womens movement in East Germany, and whether an independent women's movement existed or not. The state's policy toward women was primarily aimed in the direction of mothers, and not toward women as women. The women's question was included into the social question and the class struggle, and not identified as an individual aspect of gender relations. Gradually, women began to realize that emancipation and equality meant more than employment and economic independence.

- Description
- The study addresses gender inequality in unpaid domestic housework and childcare activities and its presumed impact on childbearing decisions in Iran. Based on the data presented, it can be concluded that along with an increasing amount of unpaid work a less gender egalitarian division of labor exists. Gender inequality in unpaid domestic work among employed couples might lead to continued low fertility and an even further reduction of it in the future in Iran.

- Description
- The last century has witnessed an upsurge in literature triggered by the feminist movement. This unprecedented event has transformed the various literary genres that are being deconstructed to suit the changing times. African literature has not been spared by the universalized world order. The paper attempts a re-analysis of gender inequality from the pre-colonial to post-colonial period from the lenses of literary narratives. Male writers like Chinua Achebe, Elechi Amadi, Wole Soyinka, Ngugi Wa Thiongo, and Cyprain Ekwensi in their literary mass are accused of condoning patriarchy, are deeply entrenched in a macho conviviality and a one dimensional and minimalised presentation of women who are demoted and assume peripheral roles. Their penchant to portray an androcentric narrative is at variance with the female gender that are trivialized through practices like patriarchy, tradition, culture, gender socialization process, marriage and domestic enslavement. The paper concludes with some contemporary showcases and meta-narratives by both male and female writers like Buchi Emecheta, Mariama Bâ, Ama Ata Aidoo, Flora Nwapa, Sembene Ousmane and Leopold Sedar Senghor who attempt to bridge the gender rifts in the African literary landscape.

- Description
- Authors want to contribute to the debate on whether countries with large Muslim populations, like for instance Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey, will embrace gender equality. The role of women in Islamic societies is still a highly charged political and cultural issue. Women’s issues are vital in the shaping of modern debates on democracy in predominantly Muslim countries. Examined were attitudes towards women’s equality by analyzing Muslims’ responses, looking at the effects of country, education, socio-economic status, age, income, religiosity and other variables. Some of the preliminary findings suggest that across the seven nations surveyed, broad majorities support gender equality but women are generally more likely to endorse equality than men.
