- Description
- The author describes differences and intersections in the development of gender and queer theories in The United States and France. The book is divided into four parts. In the first, the author examines two specifically 'American' features of gender theories since their earliest formulations: on the one hand, an emphasis on the theatricality of gender, on the other, the early adoption of a 'queer' perspective on gender issues. In the second part, the author reflects on a shift in the rhetoric concerning sexual minorities and politics that is .prevalent today. The third part deals with developments in the concept of 'sexual difference'. The last section addresses the relationship between Western feminism and capitalism by focusing on debates about prostitution.

- Description
- The Weathermen --a U.S.-based, revolutionary splinter group of Students for a Democratic Society-- advocated the overthrow of the government and capitalism, in the social and cultural environment of the New Left during the late 1960s. and toward that end, carried out a campaign of bombings, jailbreaks, and riots throughout the United States. In With the Weathermen Stern traces her involvement with this group, and her transformation from a shy, married graduate student into a go-go dancing, drugs, sex, street-fighting 'macho mama.' She describes the attractions and difficulties of joining a collective radical group and in maintaining a position within it. Stern's memoir offers a description of the raw and rough social dynamics of this community, from its strict demands to 'smash monogamy,' to its sometimes enforced orgies, and to the demeaning character assassination that was led by the group's top members. She provides a distinctly personal and female perspective on the destructive social functionality and frequently contradictory attitudes toward gender roles and women's rights within the New Left.

- Description
- Greed and lust are generally considered good only for men, and then only outside the realm of family life. The history of Western economic ideas shows that men have given themselves more cultural permission than women for the pursuit of both economic and sexual self-interest. Feminists have long contested the boundaries of this permission, demanding more than mere freedom to act more like men. Women have gradually gained the power to revise our conceptual and moral maps and to insist on a better-and less gendered-balance between self interest and care for others. This book brings women's work, their sexuality, and their ideas into the center of the dialectic between economic history and the history of economic ideas. It describes a spiralling process of economic and cultural change in Great Britain, France, and the United States since the 18th century that shaped the evolution of patriarchal capitalism and the larger relationship between production and reproduction. This feminist reinterpretation of our past holds profound implications for today's efforts to develop a more humane and sustainable form of capitalism.

- Description
- Today's political ideas over immigration highlights the plight of the working class in the United States as no other issue has recently done. The political status of immigrants exposes the dynamics of the 'new working class', which includes the former labor aristocracy, women, and people of color. This new working class suffers exploitation in advanced industrial countries as the social cost of capitalism's success in a neoliberal and globalized political economy. In this book, Kathleen Arnold analyzes the role of the state's power in creating this condition of severe inequality for the most marginalized sectors of the population. She focuses especially on the values of asceticism derived from the Protestant work ethic to explain how they function as ideological justification for the exercise of prerogative power by the state. As a counter to this repressive set of values, she develops the notion of “authentic love” borrowed from Simone de Beauvoir as a possible approach for dealing with the complex issues of exploitation in liberal democracy today.
