- Description
- Exploring the application of quotas and affirmative action at an institutional or organizational level from different perspectives, the contributions inthis book provide an understanding of the complexity and controversial nature of policies and actions in different countries. Focussing particularly on gender-related initiatives, but raising questions pertinent to other aspects of diversity, the contributions from international researchers investigate variances between and differing justifications for policies. Mijntje Lückerath writes about the feasibility of the Dutch quota bill.

- Description
- Does gender make a difference to the way the judiciary works and should work? Or, is gender blindness a built-in prerequisite of judicial objectivity? If gender does make a difference, how might this be defined? These are the key questions posed in this collection of essays. The book's pressing topicality is underlined by the fact that male opposition to women's admission to, and progress within, the judicial profession has been largely based on the argument that, because of their gender, women are naturally programmed to show empathy, partiality, and gendered prejudice - in short, essential qualities running directly counter to the need for judicial bjectivity. There remains a more or less pronounced glass ceiling to women's judicial careers.

- Description
- Gender quotas are a controversial policy measure. However, over the past twenty years they have been widely adopted around the world and especially in Europe. They are now used in politics, corporate boards, state and local public administration and even in civil society organizations. This book explores this phenomenon, providing a comparative perspective on gender quotas' adoption across thirteen European countries (Belgium, France, Slovenia, Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Germany, Austria, Norwege, Sweden, and Denmark). It also studies resistance to gender quotas by political parties and supreme courts.

- Description
- This book is a theory-building and comparative exercise in concepts commonly used to analyze the broad impacts of gender quotas. The book begins with the argument that the means by which women enter politics may influence how their presence affects political representation. Following a preface by Drude Dahlerup, the editors introduce the book with a framework for analyzing the impact of quotas, based upon descriptive, substantive and symbolic dimensions of representation. The book is organized into three sections, each devoted to analyzing one of the dimensions of representation, and each of these sections contains a chapter case study from one of four regions of the world (Western Europe, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia).

- Description
- This volume is a cross-regional examination of the connection between money, gender and political recruitment across the world. Illustrated by research from six country studies (France, Ireland, Cabo Verde, US, Malawi, Ghana), it explains the cost of elections, gender imbalance in political office and the effects of financial incentive mechanisms to increase women’s representation in politics. Money is probably one of the biggest barriers to women in the political recruitment process. By comparing how gendered electoral financing affects political recruitment processes in both established and emerging democracies, the authors identify whether and how the funding mechanisms encourage a shift in political behavior.
