- Description
- This book assesses the scale and scope of transformations in family life and their implications for gender equality and women’s empowerment. The world as well as families, and the role of women and girls within them, are changing. The report approaches families as institutions where both cooperation (solidarity and love) and conflict (inequality and violence) coexist. It explains how unequal outcomes within families are influenced by family members’ unequal power to negotiate. It also highlights the contribution of social support systems, such as women’s rights organizations, and progressive social norms. The report provides policy recommendations in order to support families and meet the needs of their members.

- Description
- In promising women equal citizenship rights and promoting gender equality, Turkey's recent welfare reforms appear to address fundamental problems-the patriarchal system limits women's lives to their roles as wives and mothers, and their labor to informal and unskilled sectors. Yet these policies, guided by the process of accession to the European Union, have conflicting outcomes for women. The reforms sweep away historic support structures and deem women 'equal citizens' without adequate interventions in legal and social frameworks, thus increasing their vulnerability. The AKP's neo-liberal policies and rising Islamic movements further weaken the reform process.

- Description
- The authors in this book explore motherhood's current representation and practice, considering developments that were unimaginable decades ago: the Internet, interracial surrogacy, raising transchildren, male mothering, intensive mothering, queer parenting, the applications of new biotechnologies, and mothering in the post-9/11 era. The work pulls together a range of disciplines and themes in motherhood studies: the effects of globalization, HIV/AIDS, welfare reform, politicians as mothers, third wave feminism, and the evolving motherhood movement.

- Description
- This book asks-and answers-big questions. Why are millions of women financially vulnerable when others have made such great progress? Why are millions of women struggling to make ends meet even though they are hard at work? What is it about our nation-government, business, family, and even women themselves-that drives women to the financial brink? To answer these questions, three major cultural and economic changes over the past 50 years are examined in detail: Women work more outside the home, but still earn less than men. Women lead more families on their own. Women today need higher education to enter the middle class.
