- Description
- This volume explores the theory of citizenship, in order to bridge the gap between the public and the private sphere. Through the application of intersectional methodology, the authors document how people’s most private decisions and practices are intertwined with public institutions and state policies. Situated perspectives, as well as application of theoretical concepts to lived experience, extend citizenship’s territory beyond the conventional public sphere and locate it at the intersection of many axes of social, political, and cultural stratification.

- Description
- The reader is divided into four sections: Part one contains early feminist historians' writings following the move from reclaiming women's past through to the development of gender history: the second part describes the interaction of feminist history with ‘the linguistic turn’ and the challenges made by post-structuralism and the responses it provoked : Part three examines the work of lesbian historians and queer theorists in their challenge of the heterosexism of feminist history writing: the final part looks at the work of black feminists and postcolonial critics/Third World scholars and how they have laid bare ethnocentric and imperialist tendencies of feminist theory.

- Description
- This is a study of war in the thought of one of the twentieth-century's important political thinkers. Hannah Arendt's writing was fundamentally rooted in her understanding of war and its political significance. But this element of her work has surprisingly been neglected in international and political theory. This book is about the full range of Arendt's historical and conceptual writing on war and introduces to international theory the distinct language she used to talk about war and the political world. It builds on her re-thinking of old concepts such as power, violence, greatness, world, imperialism, evil, hypocrisy and humanity and introduces some that are new to international thought like plurality, action, agonism, natality and political immortality. The issues that Arendt dealt with throughout her life and work continue to shape the political world and her approach to political thinking remains a source of inspiration for those in search of guidance not in what to think but how to think about politics and war. Re-reading Arendt's writing, forged through firsthand experience of occupation and struggles for liberation, political founding and resistance in time of war, reveals a more serious engagement with war than her earlier readers have recognized.

- Description
- The author addresses key themes that have emerged in politics in post-colonial states: nationalism and its developmental framing of gender relations: the debates on the post-colonial state among feminists: policy agencies that have become the state's answer to women's struggles for political and economic inclusion: democratization of the state and the implications for the refashioning of gender and power relations: practical problem-solving through quotas for women in representative politics and the limits to such an approach to political equality. She describes how women have engaged with institutions of governance in developing countries, looking in particular at political participation, deliberative democracy, representation, leadership and state feminism. She also examines the governance of the regimes of production, consumption and exchange from the last three decades by focussing on an analysis of the Trade Related Intellectual Property (TRIPS) regime and how governance of global regimes of production affects the ways in which inequalities are being reproduced.
