- Description
- The central argument of this book is that, although love is a crucial site of gendered power asymmetries, it is also a vital source of human empowerment that we cannot live without. Instead of emphasizing 'either-or', the book puts the dualities of love center stage. By offering various theoretical perspectives on what makes love such a central value and motivator for people, this title will increase one’s understanding as to why love can keep people in its grip, even when practiced in ways that deplete and oppress. The contributions within the book present new perspectives on the conditions and characteristics of non-oppressive, mutually enhancing ways of loving.

- The book begins in the 1950s, when gays and lesbians were criminals, psychiatrists saw them as mentally ill, churches saw them as sinners, and society victimized them with hatred. Against this dark backdrop, a few people began to fight back, paving the way for the revolutionary changes of the 1960s and beyond. Faderman discusses the protests in the 1960s: the counter reaction of the 1970s and early eighties: the decimated but united community during the AIDS epidemic: and the current hurdles for the right to marriage equality.

- Description
- In recent years, there has been substantial progress on LGBTQ civil rights in the United States. We are now in a time of incredible political uncertainty for queer people. This book provides an introduction to mainstream LGBTQ movements in the US, illustrating the many forms that LGBTQ activism has taken since the mid-twentieth century. The book covers a range of topics, including the Stonewall uprising and gay liberation, AIDS politics, queer activism, marriage equality fights and bisexual and transgender justice. Stulberg explores how marginalized communities have used a wide range of political and cultural tools to create change. The five key themes that guide the book are assimilationism and liberationism as strategies for equality, the possibilities of legal change, the role of art and popular culture in social change, the interconnectedness of social movements and the role of privilege in movement organizing.

- Description
- This book explores the pleasures and perils of being LHBTQ+ in the West. Though the options and freedoms for LGBTQ+ people living in the West are greater than ever before, the question is at what cost this acceptance has come and who is left behind, particularly where LGBTQ+ rights are not enough promoted and supported. The author searches for answers to these challenges as well as to the broader question of what it means to be queer in 2019 worldwide. To illustrate this she describes her emotions at the first same-sex marriage in Britain, her experiences at both the world's biggest drag queen festival in Los Angeles and Pride parades across Europe and her visit to a transgender model agency.

- Description
- The LGBT movement is on one of the most activen and engaging social movements in the world. This book advocates for LGBT rights in the U.S. to aspire beyond the narrow framework of equality. It outlines a more substantive politics with race, class, and gender at its foundation, and suggests that such a politics will produce greater and more meaningful change for a larger number of people. The book turns an experienced and thoughtful lens onto many common controversies, rhetoric, and strategic questions that face contemporary social change movements: pursuit of broad or narrow agendas, integration of economic and racial justice, integrating sexual orientation and gender identity in human rights frameworks, the persistence of sexism, the dilemmas of bipartisanship, and the challenge of seeing beyond the short term to secure gains made for the long run.

- Description
- Johnson argues for a psychosocial approach that rethinks the relationship between psychic and social realms in the field of sexuality, without reducing it to either. Weaving through an expanse of theoretical and empirical examples drawn from sociology, psychology, queer and cultural studies, she produces an innovative, transdisciplinary perspective on sexual identities, subjectivities and politics that makes an original contribution to key debates ranging from identity politics and gay marriage, to mental health ‘risks’ and queer youth suicide.

- Description
- In this book Weeks sets out how sexual history has developed and its implications for our understanding of the ways we live today. The emergence of a new wave of feminism and lesbian and gay activism in the 1970s transformed the subject, heavily influenced by new trends in social and cultural history, radical sociological insights and the impact of Michel Foucault’s work. The result was an increasing emphasis on the historical shaping of sexuality, and on the existence of many different sexual meanings and cultures on a global scale. With chapters on, amongst others, lesbian, gay and queer history, feminist sexual history, the mainstreaming of sexual history, and the globalization of sexual history,

- This book is about a same-sex wedding ceremony in sixteenth-century Rome. The case involved a group of mostly Spanish and Portuguese men, arrested and executed in Rome in 1578, said to have performed same-sex wedding ceremonies in one of the city's major churches. We know about the incident from a number of sources, including the travel journal of the French essayist Michel de Montaigne. Ferguson brings the story to life in detail. He reveals not only the names of the men but also where they lived, how they were employed, and who their friends were. In particular, he unearths a surprising amount of detail about the men’s sex lives, and how others responded to this information, which allows him to explore attitudes toward marriage, sex, and gender at the time.
