- Description
- The authors demonstrate that battered women who are forced to kill their attackers often face unfair convictions and sentences due to unequal treatment by the law and gendered modes of punishment. They argue that in different studies startling levels of discrimination in the courts against women who were victims of domestic violence were revealed.

- Description
- More than half of the women in Papua New Guinea face domestic violence. Many of these women turn to the Virgin Mary for help. Author shows how, in the urban setting of Port Moresby and Madang, Christianity and in particular Marian devotion, is deployed in response to sexual and gender based violence. As is shown, Mary's role is in fact ambiguous as she both empowers and desempowers women.

- Description
- In this special about gender and power attention is being paid to the imprisonment of two human rights defenders in Usbekiztan: Gulbakhor Turaeva and journalist Umida Niyazova. Ruta Pels writes about the pre-election is Estonia. Elected women, just as men, do not always keep their promises. The candidacy of Gordana Chomich is viewed as one of the most possible candidate for the prime minister's position in Serbia. In January 2007, Supreme Rada rejected the draft amendments providing equal rights and opportunities to women and men in the elections process. Some of male politicians explained this fact as saying that the male parliament is afraid of competition with female politicians. In an interview with probably the only gender issues lobby Oksana Belozir, elected member of the Supreme Rada, deputy head of pro-presidential Our Ukraine fraction, ex-minister of culture of Ukraine explains. Gender misbalance negatively influences the atmosphere in the Armenian parliament. In the past, there were only 4 women in the Armenian parliament, which is 3% percent of the total parliament members. Presently, the percent of women parliamentarians is 5.3%. The problem in the Georgian parliament is that competent and professional women make men feel uneasy. Domestic violence in Turkmenistan is generally explained by combination of circumstances. Police is unwilling to investigate the domestic violence cases, and social centers or domestic violence centers could play an important role, but there are no such organizations in Turkmenistan.

- Description
- Drawing on international evaluations and a recent study conducted in Scotland this article examines whether legislation in the form of civil protection orders has the effect of curtailing the actions of abusers and if not, what occurs when the traditional criminal justice response comes into play. The strengths of civil protection orders and some explanations for the weaknesses of these orders are considered alongside the question of whether there is any value in women continuing to engage with the law in response to domestic abuse.
