- Description
- 'This report shows that there is a sort of inevitability about women’s increasing engagement in labour markets. Between 1980 and 2008, the rate of female labour force participation increased from 50.2 to 51.7 per cent. In countries and regions where participation rates at the beginning of the period were below the world median, the increases were much more dramatic. .On the other hand, in some countries where female labour force participation was much higher than the median in 1980, probably due to the prevalence of poverty in the country and the necessity of working for survival, the rates showed a decline over the period. What this means is that over time there has been both a general increase in female economic participation and a shrinking of the distance between countries with low levels and countries with high levels of participations.''

- 'The second Global Report on discrimination under the follow-up to the ILO Declaration on Fundamental .Principles and Rights at Work examines emerging issues in patterns of workplace discrimination and inequalities and recent policy responses, and outlines the ILO’s experience and achievements to date and the challenges it faces. It points to the need for better enforcement of legislation against discrimination, as well as non-regulatory initiatives by governments and enterprises, and equipping the social partners to be more effective in .making equality a reality at the workplace. The Report puts forward other proposals for future action, including making equality a mainstream objective of the ILO’s Decent Work Country Programmes.'

- Description
- The estimates on maternal mortality presented in this report are the sixth in a series of exercises by the United Nations agencies. Considering that only a third of countries are characterized as having a complete civil registration system with good attribution of cause of death, it is imperative that countries with incomplete civil .registration systems take steps to strengthen those systems. This will tremendously improve the estimation of maternal mortality and monitoring of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5: Improve maternal health. The two targets for assessing MDG 5 are reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by three quarters between 1990 and 2015, and achieving universal access to reproductive health by 2015.

- Description
- '78 states worldwide continue to criminalise same-sex sexual behaviour, and due to the legal legacies of the British Empire, 42 of these – more than half – are in the Commonwealth of Nations. Lately many states have seen the emergence of new sexual nationalisms, leading to increased enforcement of colonial sodomy laws against men, new criminalisations of sex between women and discrimination against transgender people. This publication challenges these developments as the first publication to focus on experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) and all non-heterosexual people in the Commonwealth and offers the most internationally extensive analysis to date of the global struggle for decriminalisation of same-sex sexual behaviour and relationships.'

- 'Research clearly shows that women throughout the world are particularly vulnerable to the threats posed .by a changing climate. In countries where there is marked gender inequality, four times as many women .as men die during floods. In some disasters, women and children have been 14 times more likely to die .than men. This phenomenon will grow more frequent with global warming.'

- Description
- 'The ‘due diligence principle’, as it is commonly termed, holds States accountable for human rights abuses committed not only by the State or State actors, but also by non-State actors. Violence against women (VAW) is most often perpetrated by non-State actors — for example, a close male relative or an intimate partner. The due diligence principle is a critical tool in the formulation of accountability. By making the State accountable for violence perpetrated by non-State actors, public international law recognizes that VAW, regardless of who commits it, constitutes human rights violations. Due diligence has also ruptured the artificial ‘public/private sphere’ divide and the dichotomy between State and non-State actors, as States are now not only permitted but .obliged to enter the so-called ‘private sphere’ where most instances of VAW take place and where States have traditionally been barred.'

- Description
- This report gives a picture of where women stand today and how they have progressed in the world of work over the last 20 years, and of the root causes of inequalities and how they should be tackled based on what works and the guidance provided by international labour standards. It shows that, despite some encouraging advances, major gender gaps at work remain. Increasing gender parity in educational attainment does not prevent women from being concentrated in middle to lower-paid occupations that reflect traditional gender stereotypes and beliefs about women’s and men’s aspirations and capabilities.
