Women in a changing world
Women in a changing world recounts the evolution, pioneer efforts and achievements of the International Council of Women and of its affiliated National councils in the cause of peace, of human rights, of educational opportunity and cultural interchange throughout three major periods of world history: 1888-1913, 1914-1938 and 1939-1963. Brief biographical sketches recall the careers of its distinguished presidents, and a short account is given of the development of collaboration between the ICW and intergovernmental institutions from the First International Peace Conference at The Hague in 1899, through the League of Nations, tot the United Nations and its Specialized Agencies. Among others, the International Archives for the Women's Movement (IAV), (IIAV), is mentioned as caretakers of documents related to the International Council of Women.- Creator

Italian women and international cold war politics, 1944-1968
A study of the relationship between national Italian women's associations and international women's movements from 1944, when the associations became active, to 1968, when another generation of activists led women's movements in a new direction. Particular attention is payed to the UDI's [Unione Donne Italiane] work with the largest international postwar women's organization, the pro-Soviet Women's International Democratic Federation (WIDF), and the CIF's [Catholic Centro Italiano Femminile] relationship with the global Catholic organization the World Movement of Mothers (WMM), to better understand the ways in which the Cold War affected both national and international agendas for women's rights.- Creator

Gender history in a transnational perspective
This volume reflects the potential of a new perspective that allows for a more adequate analysis of transnational activities, by looking at the lives and work of women’s activists in informal border-crossings, ephemeral NGOs, the lower management of established international organizations, and other global networks. By pointing out cultural hierarchies, the vicissitudes of translation and re-interpretation, and the ambiguity of intercultural exchange, this volume demonstrates the potential of transnational history. Chapter 1. Understanding international feminisms as ‘transnational’ – an anachronism? May Wright Sewall and the creation of the International Council of Women, 1889 to 1904 / Karen Offen: Chapter 2. A forgotten instance of women’s international organizing. The transnational feminist networks of the Women’s Progressive Society (1890) and the International Women’s Union (1893–1898) / Julie Carlier: Chapter 3. The national councils of women in France, Italy and Portugal. Comparisons and entanglements 1888-1939 / Anne Cova: Chapter 4. How did women use the vote? Women and transnational politics in the twentieth century / Pat Thane: Chapter 6. A transnational career? The republican and utopian politics of Frances Wright (1795–1852) / Jane Rendall: Chapter 7. What is a transnational life? Some thoughts about Marguerite Thibert’s career and life (1886–1982) Françoise Thébaud: Chapter 8. Wereldvrouwenconferentie 2011

This volume is a collection of contributions centered around three main themes. The first part, brings together first-hand accounts from women’s lives as they face the horrors of war, drawn mainly from original sources such as diaries, letters, memoirs and writings. The second explores the lives and thought of several women activists who challenged inequalities and sought to create new opportunities for women, contributing to the definition of a transnational culture of peace. The final section examines the work of a group of women who saw the outbreak of the First World War and the emergence of an international women’s movement for peace as an opportunity to act for their personal emancipation, and, in some cases, for a different idea of politics. The volume provides a selection of contributions from little-known European contexts such as Italy, Poland, and Austria. The presence and contribution of African-American women, which has been neglected in the history of women’s pacifism, is also explored. Particular attention is given to the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and to the International Congress of Women, held in The Hague in 1915.
