The signifying body
Ingram argues that ethical questions about sex and race must be understood in light of ontological ones and that language plays a central role in the connection between ontology and ethics. She examines some twentieth-century film and literary texts, including Neil Jordan’s The Crying Game, J. M. Coetzee’s Foe, Toni Morrison’s Paradise and Don DeLillo’s The Body Artist, to argue that material signification is crucial to the experience of living authentically and achieving an ethical relation with the Other.- Creator

Deleuze and gender
Unlike other philosophers whose work can be applied to questions of sex and gender, Deleuze's philosophy was motivated by the problem of desire and difference. Over the last three decades, feminist theory, gender theory and queer theory have been revolutionised and rejuvenated by Deleuze's provocation to consider sexual difference beyond the paradigm of the Oedipal family and Western humanism. In this volume, a series of theorists extend Deleuze's already radical philosophy into ideas of the post-human, truth, reading, sexual difference and gender politics.- Creator

Knowing otherwise

Knowing otherwise
Prejudice is often not a conscious attitude: because of ingrained habits in relating to the world, one may act in prejudiced ways toward others without explicitly understanding the meaning of one’s actions. Similarly, one may know how to do certain things, like ride a bicycle, without being able to articulate in words what that knowledge is. These are examples of what Alexis Shotwell discusses in this book as phenomena of “implicit understanding.” Presenting an analysis of this concept, she highlights how this kind of understanding may be used to ground political and social change, such as combating racism in its less overt and more deep-rooted forms. She begins by distinguishing four basic types of implicit understanding: nonpropositional, skill-based, or practical knowledge: embodied knowledge: potentially propositional knowledge: and affective knowledge. She then develops the notion of a racialized and gendered “common sense,” , and clarifies the idea of embodied knowledge by showing how it operates in the realm of aesthetics. She also examines the role that both negative affects, like shame, and positive affects, like sympathy, can play in moving us away from racism and toward political solidarity and social justice.- Creator

Gender
In this new edition the author provides an introduction to the concept of gender and the different theoretical approaches which have developed within gender studies. Utilizing life narratives, she investigates processes of gendering in three important spheres of contemporary social life: production, reproduction and consumption. The book highlights the centrality of gender in everyday life and shows how thinking about gender is influenced by changing political contexts. As well as updating the discussion with the latest scholarship, political concerns and economic data, the new edition pays closer attention to intersectionality and hybrid identities, as well as exploring the complexities of contemporary relations of masculinity and femininity in the light of new feminist activities.- Creator
