How a century of war changed the lives of women
This book looks at the impact of war on women in Britain. It shows how conflict has changed women’s lives and how those changes have put women at the centre of peace campaigning. Lindsey German shows how women have played a central role in anti-war and peace movements, including the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The women themselves talk about how they overcame prejudice and difficulty to become active. The book looks at how the changing nature of war, especially the involvement of civilians, increasingly involves significant numbers of women. As well as providing an inspiring account of women's opposition to war, the book also tackles key contemporary developments, challenging negative assumptions about Muslim women and showing how anti-war movements are feeding into a broader desire to change society.- Creator

Frauen. Freiheit. Frieden

Sisterhood questioned
In this study Bolt sheds light on the differences in the area of race, class and internationalism, which flourished in an era of political reaction, economic insecurity, polarising nationalism and resurgent anti-feminism. The author reveals how the conflicts were seized upon and publicised by contemporaries, and how the activists themselves were forced to confront the increasingly complex tensions. in particular, the American and british women's movements grew further apart as British women became more conscious of American money, expectation of influence and opposition to the existence of Britain's empire.- Creator

Ethnic pride, American patriotism
In Ethnic Pride, American Patriotism the author presents a history of inter-war America from the perspective of new Slovak and Eastern European immigrant communities. .Like the groups that preceded them, Slovak immigrants came to define being American as adhering to its political principles: they saw no contradiction between being patriotic Americans and maintaining pride in their ancestry. To counter the negative effects of the 1924 immigration law, Slovaks mobilized a variety of political and cultural activities to insure group survival and promote ethnic pride. In numerous localities 'Slovak days' brought first and second generation immigrants together to celebrate their dual identity. .Alexander's study adds complexity and nuance to entrenched notions of conflicts between tradition-bound immigrants and their American-born children. Showing that ethnicity mattered to both generations, Alexander challenges generalizations derived from 'whiteness' studies- Creator

Masculinities in politics and war
Covering the period from the American Revolution to the Second World War and ranging over five continents, the essays in this book bring to light the many ‘masculinities’ that shaped - and were shaped by - political and military modernity. Preceded by extensive historical and theoretical introductions, the volume is clearly divided into sections on revolution, nation, politics and subjectivity- Creator

Behind the lines
What effect did the two world wars have on the relations between women and men? Women’s crucial contributions to war efforts challenged assumptions about their social roles. Why did this not produce permanent changes in gender relations? Drawing on comparative material - from government policy to popular media, poetry and fiction, and personal letters - this book examines the reconstitution of gender relations that occurred in many Western countries during both world wars.- Creator

Shaping a global women's agenda
Garner documents Western-led international organisations that dominated women’s involvement in global politics from the 1925 founding of the Joint Standing Committee of Women’s International Organisations up through the UN Decade for Women (1976-85). These nongovernmental organisations successfully infused liberal feminist and humanist values into the agendas of the League of Nations and United Nations, expanded the role of NGOs in global governance, and pressed intergovernmental bodies to recognise what they collectively defined as ‘universal’ women’s rights and human rights. Although women have not achieved an equal measure of policy making power within their societies or within the global governance system, the League of Nations and the United Nations provided women NGOs with forums to challenge these inequalities and to lessen discriminations against women. Documenting global campaigns in the twentieth century, Garner includes biographical information about international leaders as she discusses important historic debates regarding feminist goals and strategies among women- Creator

A critical woman
Barbara Wootton was one of the extraordinary public figures of the twentieth century. She was an outstanding social scientist, an architect of the welfare state, an iconoclast who challenged conventional wisdom and the first woman to sit as Speaker in the House of Lords in Parliament. This biography is an account of the making of British social policy at a critical period seen through the lens of the life and work of a pivotal figure. Oakley tells a story about the intersections of the public and the private and about the way her subject’s life unfolded within, was shaped by, and helped to shape a particular social and intellectual context.- Creator

Lumberjills
During the two world wars, it is well known that women all over the country entered factories, armed services and farms, filling gaps left by the exodus of men. In forestry, they also formed the Women's Timber Corps. Timber was a vital resource, imported into the UK in vast quantities, but wartime meant the country had to be self-sufficient .- Creator

Female imperialism and national identity
This is a study about the biggest and longest lasting group of female imperialists in the British Empire - the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE). After placing the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire in the context of recent scholarly work in Canadian, gender, imperial history, and post-colonial theory, the book follows the IODE’s history through the 20th century. Chapters focus upon the IODE’s attempts to create a British Canada through its maternal feminist work in education, health, welfare, and citizenship. In addition it reflects on the IODE’s responses to threats to Anglo-Canadian hegemony posed by immigration, World Wars, and Communism, and examines the complex relationship between imperial loyalty and settler nationalism.- Creator

Gender and war in twentieth-century Eastern Europe
This volume explores the role of gender on both the home and fighting fronts in eastern Europe during World Wars I and II. By using gender as a category of analysis, the authors seek to arrive at a more nuanced understanding of the subjective nature of wartime experience and its representations. While historians have long equated the fighting front with the masculine and the home front with the feminine, the contributors challenge these dichotomies, demonstrating that they are based on culturally embedded assumptions about heroism and sacrifice. Major themes include the ways in which wartime experiences challenge traditional gender roles, postwar restoration of gender order, collaboration and resistance, the body, and memory and commemoration.- Creator

Irish women at war
This volume covers the country from Cork to Belfast, from 1914 up to the early 2000s. Half of the book is devoted to Northern Ireland and to the second part of the twentieth century. The chapters describe the participation of women in war, the portrayal and non-portrayal of women in war, their experiences of war and the consequences they suffered. This book is not only about women fighting, it is also about how war and warlike situations affected women of all types and classes and their children: prostitutes, rural women, urban women, protestant women, Catholic women, writers, dramatists, artists, journalists, women in the peace movement, feminists, free women and imprisoned women. The thirteen chapters include two articles on the First World War, about 'The Women's Legion'- a women's voluntary organization, and one about the poet and writer Winifred Letts and her responses to the war. Two articles on the Irish War of Independence are concerned with representation and portrayals of women involved in the nationalist cause. The Second World War is the subject of three articles, about prostitutes, babies and rural women.- Creator

Surrealist masculinities
Surrealist Masculinities offers an exploration of how surrealist visual production was shaped by constructions of gender and sexuality, particularly masculinity, in the 1920s and early 1930s. Amy Lyford builds on feminist critical approaches to surrealism, which have viewed the female body in surrealism as symptomatic of male misogyny: yet she also departs from such work by arguing that representations of an anxious, ambivalent, or perverse masculinity were integral to the movement's critique of France's 'return to order' in the years following World War I. This book analyzes surrealist work in relation to the history of surrealism and investigates how surrealist artists and writers appropriated contemporary medical science, advertising, and sexology in their quest to undermine the status quo.- Creator

Beyond the battlefield
Catherine Speck provides a fascinating account of women artists during wartime in America, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and their visual responses to war, both at the front lines and on the home front. In addition to following high-profile artists such as American photographer Lee Miller, Speck recounts the experiences of nurses, voluntary aides, and ambulance drivers who found the time to create astonishing artworks in the midst of war zones. She also describes the feelings of disempowerment revealed in the work done by women distant from the conflict.- Creator

Women and transnational activism in historical perspective
This volume brings together the work of historians who consider women as transnational activists from the late nineteenth century to the years following the Second World War. The authors deepen our understanding of the complex ways in which individuals and organizations sought to achieve goals such as women's rights, peace, racial equality and medical relief. By analyzing the complexities of these women's lives and activism, the authors challenge the traditional narrative of international relations history and broaden our understanding of women's history and activism.- Creator
