Those good Gertrudes
This book explores the professional, civic, and personal roles of women teachers throughout American history. Its themes and findings build from the mostly unpublished writings of many women. Clifford studied personal history manuscripts in archives and consulted printed autobiographies, diaries, correspondence, oral histories, interviews to probe the multifaceted imagery that has surrounded teaching. This work surveys a long past where schoolteaching was essentially men's work, with women relegated to restricted niches such as teaching rudiments of the vernacular language to young children and socializing girls for traditional gender roles.- Creator

The merchant of Prato's wife
Ann Crabb investigates the social and economic importance of women’s roles as wives and mothers, early modern European views on honor, and the practice of letter writing in Margherita’s world.Margherita’s comments demonstrate her attitudes toward her unhappy marriage and her inability to have children, along with other aspects of her life. Her letters reveal the pride she felt in carrying out her many responsibilities as a wife and, later, a widow: in scribal letter writing, in business, in household management, and in farming. Crabb emphasizes that the role of a wife was a recognized social position, beyond her individual relations with her husband, and provided opportunities beyond what restrictive laws or restrictive views of female honor would suggest.- Creator

Proletarian and gendered mass migrations
This book connects the 19th- and 20th-century migrations in global transcultural perspective. It emphasizes macro-regional internal interactions between and within macro-regions. The essays look at migrant workers experiences in constraining frames and the options they seize or constraints they circumvent. It traces the development from 19th-century proletarian migrations to industries and plantations across the globe to 20th- and 21st-century domestics and caregiver migrations. It integrates male and female migration and shows how women have always been present in mass migrations.- Creator

The agency of women in Asia

The agency of women in Asia
This book aims to explore the meanings and operation of agency exercised by women in various cultures and contexts in Asia. It analyses women's capacity for action and how women sometimes resist the discourses and conditions that shape their lives. The book also discusses how this agency can be interpreted and assessed. The contributors to this book examine particular women's practice and expression in particular contexts: 'parasite singles'-especially unmarried young women-in Japan, whose unconventional lifestyles seem to effect a subversion of the expected female roles of daughters, mothers, and wives: Indonesian women employed as domestic workers in Singapore: the women from South Korea and the Philippines who have married Japanese men through the international marriage business system: female Muslim healers in Lombok who work against fate: rural Balinese women who have their babies in hospitals: and female performers and performances in contemporary Indonesian theatre.- Creator

The new maids
This book examines the relationship between globalization, transnationalism, gender and the care economy. The author addresses questions that surround the increasing number of migrant domestic workers and cleaners, child-carers and caregivers who maintain modern Western households, the author argues that domestic work plays the defining role in global ethnic and gender hierarchies. Using a central ethnographic study of immigrant domestic workers and their German employees as its starting point, she uses the voices of such women themselves to provide unique conceptual and evidential support for this vital new approach argument.- Creator

Considering medieval women and gender
Professor Stuard collects here a set of her articles on women and gender in the Middle Ages, beginning with her first, published in 1975. The first section, on marriage, opens with an exploration of the Ragusa/Dubrovnik archives, reaches out to consider patterns of gift-giving at marriage and of consumption. The second section focuses on slavery, specifically women destined for domestic service. The final parts contain historiographical surveys of the field of women and gender studies, and three biographical studies.- Creator

The women of Nar
The books gives the account of the three years Joyce Roper spent in Turkey, living in Nar, a small village in Anatolia. She found a society with a traditional culture, ruled by laws of religious observance, in which women play, and expect to play, a subservient role. The author helped the women with their daily work in the field and the making of bread, attended their births and deaths, celebrated with them at their ceremonies, weddings and festivals.- Creator

Gender and international migration

Gender and international migration
In 2006, the United Nations reported on the “feminization” of migration, noting that the number of female migrants had doubled over the last five decades. Likewise, global awareness of issues like human trafficking and the exploitation of immigrant domestic workers has increased attention to the gender makeup of migrants. Donato and Gabaccia evaluate the historical evidence to show that women have been a significant part of migration flows for centuries. This book demonstrates that variation in the gender composition of migration reflect not only the movements of women relative to men, but larger shifts in immigration policies and gender relations in the changing global economy.- Creator

Masculine compromise

Masculine compromise
The authors show how migration has forced migrant men to renegotiate their roles as lovers, husbands, fathers, and sons. They also reveal how migrant men make masculine compromises: they strive to preserve the gender boundary and their symbolic dominance within the family by making concessions on marital power and domestic division of labor, and by redefining filial piety and fatherhood. The stories of these migrant men and their families reveal another side to China’s sweeping economic reform, modernization, and grand social transformations.- Creator

Feminism’s forgotten fight

Feminism’s forgotten fight
Swinth dispels the notion that second-wave feminists pushed women into the workplace without offering solutions to issues they faced at home. She examines activists’ campaigns for work and family in depth and helps us see how feminism’s opponents, not feminists themselves, blocked the movement’s aspirations. Liberals and radicals, white women and women of color, were rethinking gender roles and redistributing housework.- Creator

Chopsticks only works in pairs'
Shanshan Du suggests that by shifting our attention away from Eurocentric utopias, we may be surprised to learn that gender-egalitarian societies do exist. This book explores one of the few cultures in which gender unity and gender equality prevail both in practice and in the belief system. Du argues that the Lahu people of southwestern China provide an example of such a gender ideal, vividly expressed by their proverb, 'chopsticks only work in pairs.' Extensive fieldwork and interviews demonstrate the gender unity in labour allocation and leadership, reproductive activities, and gender relations generally.- Creator
