Sex trafficking

Sex trafficking
Kara investigates the mechanics of the global sex trafficking business across four continents and takes stock of its devastating human toll. Drawing on his background in finance and economics, Kara provides a rare business analysis of sex trafficking, focusing on the local drivers and global macroeconomic trends that gave rise to the industry after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He quantifies the size, growth, and profitability of sex trafficking and other forms of modern slavery and locates the sectors that would be hardest hit by specifically designed interventions and penalties. Kara supplements his analysis with an account of this unconscionable industry, sharing the stories of victims and revealing the conditions of their exploitation. He concludes with a proposal for aggressive measures that target the essential business and economic functioning of the sex trafficking industry designed to provide a more effective global approach to abolishing these crimes against the world's most vulnerable and exploited persons.- Creator

Women, islam and everyday life
This book examines Islam and women’s everyday life, focusing in particular on the issue of polygamy. It discusses the interpretations of the Qur’anic verses that are at the heart of Muslim controversies over polygamy, with some groups believing that Islam enshrines polygamy as a male right, others seeing it as permitted but discouraged in favour of monogamy, and other groups arguing that Islam implicitly prohibits polygamy. Based on fieldwork conducted in Indonesia, it provides an account of women’s lived experiences in polygamous marriages, describing the different perceptions of the practice and strategies in dealing with it. It also considers the impact of changing public policy, in particular Indonesia’s Marriage Law which restricted the practice of polygamy.- Creator

Why women mean business
This book takes economic arguments for change to the heart of the corporate world. Never before has there been so much international attention to the economic importance of women and the need for policies to enable them to fulfil their potential. The position of women - as employees, consumers and leaders - is seen as a measure of health, maturity and economic viability. This book tells how companies that learn to adapt to women will be better able to respond to the challenge of an ageing workforce and the demands of the next generation of knowledge workers. The authors compare policies and approaches in countries around the world, that offer surprising and envious results.- Creator

Contemporary women's movements in Hungary
This study focuses on the role of women's activism in a society where women are not yet adequately represented by established parties and political institutions. Drawing on eyewitness accounts of meetings and protests, as well as interviews with leading female activists, Fábián examines the interactions between women's groups in Hungary and studies the unique brand of democracy they have forged in postcommunist Eastern Europe. Through her analysis, she demonstrates how democratization and globalization -- with their attendant range of challenges and opportunities -- have led women to redefine public—private divides.- Creator

Enterprising women and shipping in the nineteenth century
This book shows that women could and did manage male businesses and manage men. Women invested in the expanding shipping industry throughout the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century and actively ran non feminine businesses such as shipbuilding. By setting the businesswomen firmly in the context of the industry, the book examines the business challenges from the woman's perspective. It demonstrates how a woman needed to understand the business requirements while in some cases also being a single parent. As business managers, they had to manage a male workforce, deal with large and important customers and ensure they maintained their firm's reputation and continued to win orders. Nor were these women mere caretakers for the next generation, in many cases continuing to run the business in an active manner after their son or sons were of age. This book reveals communities of independent women in England who were active entrepreneurs and investors, in a period when women were increasingly supposed to be relegated to a more domestic role. It includes brief biographies of many of these women entrepreneurs who were also conventional mothers, wives and daughters.- Creator

Gender and migration in 21st century Europe
Providing interdisciplinary and empirically grounded insights into the issues surrounding gender and migration into and within Europe, this work presents a comprehensive and critical overview of the historical, legal, policy and cultural framework underpinning different types of European migration. Analysing the impact of migration on women's careers, the impact of migration on family life and gender perspectives on forced migration, the authors also examine the consequences of EU enlargement for women's migration opportunities and practices, as well as the impact of new regulatory mechanisms at EU level in addressing issues of forced migration and cross-national family breakdown. The book also offers new insight into the issue of skilled migration and the gendering of previously male-dominated sectors of the labour market.- Creator

Gendered tradeoffs
The central thesis of this book is that gender inequality in the workplace is generated and reinforced by national policies and conditions. The authors look at four empirical chapters on employment, work hours, occupational sex segregation, and the gender wage gap. The contours of inequality across and within countries are shaped by specific aspects of social policy that either relieve or concentrate the demands of care giving within households—usually in the hands of women—and at the same time shape workplace expectations. Pettit and Hook make a strong case that equality for women in the workplace depends not on whether women are included in the labor market but on how they are included. The research draws on data from twenty-one industrialized nations to compare women’s and men’s economic outcomes across nations, and over time.- Creator

Fertility, living arrangements, care and mobility
Many parts of the world are experiencing a demographic restructuring, resulting in an ageing population with significant work and care pressures. This book examines some of the important trends that have underpinned reductions in fertility, including delayed child-bearing and increased childlessness. It demonstrates how relationships between partners have resulted in new living arrangements with changing attitudes from marriage to co-habitation as the social norm, and it considers the health and well-being for particular at risk groups such as the elderly and stepparents as well as aspects of mobility such as household migration and commuting to school. The book brings together a series of studies that all involve quantitative analyses of secondary data from censuses, surveys or administrative records.- Creator

This book addresses research research issues, with implications for the cultivation and retention of scientific talent and for practice and policy in science education. It also has implications for understanding the 'culture of science’ and the factors that encourage/discourage participation. Hanson’s statistical data and analyses are significant in the strength of findings, [in the] power of inference for young women's interest in and perceptions about science, and for the ways in which race and gender do/do not operate together in affecting outcomes for young women.- Creator

Women in power in post-communist parliaments
This book examines the life and work of women who have reached positions of political power after the end of communism in Europe. It explores the roles they have adopted, the relationships they have cultivated, and the agendas they have pursued. This volume treats the issues comparatively, in six countries -- the Czech Republic, Germany (with a focus on the former GDR), Slovenia, Bulgaria, Poland, and Russia. It also includes interviews with and written statements by the very 'women in power' discussed in the first half of the book, giving voice to their common and divergent experiences as political actors within an environment of stormy economies and new foreign engagements, particularly with the European Union.- Creator

Opening doors wider
From the days of the fur trade through the contemporary period, women have played important roles in the public life of Canada. Until the 1970s, however, these contributions were generally overlooked. This book looks at the progress made in the last forty years to raise the profile of women's involvement in public life. .The contributors focus on two questions with reference to community activism, the politics of feminist organizing, parties and elections, and the communications environment in which politicians operate. First, are the doors to participation presently open wider than they were in the past? What obstacles as well as possibilities face specific groups of female citizens? Have patterns of media coverage shifted such that women can expect to engage in community groups and party organizations on something approaching an even playing field? Second, how can these doors be opened wider, both in terms of real-world participation and our scholarly understanding of public engagement? What remedies have been proposed? What research directions need to be pursued?- Creator

Wandering women and holy matrons
This book explores women's experiences of pilgrimage in Latin Christendom between 1300 and 1500 C.E. Women commonly engaged in pilgrimage in a variety of forms, both physical and spiritual, voluntary and compulsory, and to locations nearby and distant. Acting within both practical and social constraints, such women helped to construct more positive interpretations of their desire to travel and of their experiences as pilgrims.- Creator

Incomplete revolution
The future depends very much on how we respond to three challenges of the new century, all of which threaten to increase social inequality: first, how we adapt institutions to the new role of women: second, how we prepare our children for the knowledge economy: and third, how we respond to the new demography, in particular low fertility and an ageing population. In this book Gøsta Esping-Andersen examines how different societies have responded to these challenges. It focuses especially on the quest for gender equality, on the role of families in the reproduction of social inequalities, and on major inequities associated with an ageing population. Through comparative analysis he seeks to identify the kinds of welfare state reform that can optimize not only individuals' life chances but also collective welfare.- Creator

Working bodies
Through a series of case studies of low-status interactive and embodied servicing work, this book examines the theoretical and empirical nature of the shift to embodied work in service-dominated economies. The author defines ‘body work’ to include the work by service sector employees on their own bodies and on the bodies of others. It .sets UK case studies in the context of global patterns of economic change and explores the consequences of growing polarization in the service sector. The book draws on geography, sociology, anthropology, labour market studies, and feminist scholarship- Creator

Violence against women
Brownridge investigates groups of women who are particularly vulnerable to violent victimization from an intimate male partner. In the past, there has been a reluctance to address this issue to avoid stereotyping vulnerable groups of women. However, developments in the field, particularly intersectionality theory, which recognizes women’s diversity in experiences of violence, suggest that the time has come to make the study of violence in vulnerable populations a new sub-field in the area. The author identifies where violence on vulnerable populations fits within the field, develops a method for studying vulnerable populations, and brings new knowledge to the field through the analysis original data on eight populations of women who are particularly vulnerable to violence.- Creator

European gender regimes and policies ; comparative perspectives
Comprehensive gender equality remains an unfulfilled goal in many European countries, in spite of important developments and challenges to the traditional gendered division of labour roles. This book reviews recent advances of gender policies in different countries in the European Union, together with recent empirical data on gender relations in the labour market and within families. Particular attention is paid to the latest developments in the field of gender equality in different Scandinavian countries - countries which are customarily seen as forerunners in the area. The title culminates with an in-depth discussion on the possibility of converging alternate gender policy regimes in Europe.- Creator

Family, gender and law in a globalizing Middle East and South Asia
The essays in this collection examine issues of gender, family, and law in the Middle East and South Asia. In particular, the authors address the impact of colonialism on law, family, and gender relations: the role of religious politics in writing family law and the implications for gender relations: and the tension between international standards emerging from UN conferences and conventions and various nationalist projects. Employing the frame of globalization, the authors highlight how local and global forces interact and influence the experience and actions of people who engage with the law. . .By virtue of a 'south-south' comparison of two quite similar and culturally linked regions, contributors avoid positing 'the West' as a modern telos. Drawing upon the fields of anthropology, history, sociology, and law, this volume offers an exploration of the complicated history of jurisprudence with regard to family and gender.- Creator

Suicidal behavior of young migrant women in the Netherlands
Young Turkish women and South Asian-Surinamese women are much more likely to attempt suicide than young Dutch women. On the other hand, their Moroccan counterparts are less likely to do so. In particular, the extent to which young women are restricted in important life choices plays a crucial role. Figures from the Rotterdam Public Health Service (GGD) showed that 19.2 % of young Surinamese Hindu women had attempted suicide. 14.6 % of young Turkish women, and 8.8 % of young Dutch women. Yet only 6.2 % of young Moroccan women reported ever making a suicide attempt. According to Van Bergen, a migratory background or an ethnic minority status therefore fails to fully explain the increased risk of suicidal behaviour among young female migrants. Van Bergen interviewed fifty women who had previously attempted suicide: both women with a migratory background and native Dutch women.- Creator

Gender and the contours of precarious employment
This book presents a challenge to the social, economic, and political stability of labour markets in industrialized societies and there is widespread consensus that its growth is contributing to a series of common social inequalities, especially along the lines of gender and citizenship. The editors argue that these inequalities are evident at the national level across industrialized countries, as well as at the regional level within federal societies, such as Canada, Germany, the United States, and Australia and in the European Union. This book brings together contributions addressing this issue which include case studies exploring the size, nature, and dynamics of precarious employment in different industrialized countries and chapters examining conceptual and methodological challenges in the study of precarious employment in comparative perspective.- Creator

The fertility transition in Iran
The fertility rate in the Islamic Republic of Iran fell from around 7.0 births per woman in the early 1980s to 1.9 births per woman in 2006. That this, the largest and fastest fall in fertility ever recorded, should have occurred in one of the world’s few Islamic Republics demands explanation. This book documents the progress of the fertility decline and displays its association with social and economic characteristics. It addresses an explanation of the fall of fertility in this Islamic context by considering the relevance of standard theories of fertility transition. All the available national demographic data are used in addition to two major surveys conducted by the authors. Demographic description is preceded by a socio-political history of Iran in recent decades, providing a context for the demographic changes. The authors conclude with their views on the importance of specific socio-economic and political changes to the demographic transition. Their concluding arguments suggest continued low fertility in Iran.- Creator

This book draws on both historical and contemporary European case-studies to offer an account of the relationship between gender and well-being. The authors focus on key discussions of the changing conceptions of well-being from early twentieth century calculations of the relationship between income and the cost-of-living, to more recent critiques from feminist writers. Their answers allow them to significantly challenge the issue with the idea that well-being is not only associated with income or opulence but also relates to more abstract concepts including capabilities, freedom, and agency of different women and men and will be of considerable interest to economic and social historians, sociologists of health, gender, sexuality and economists.- Creator
