It includes an overview of efforts by UNFPA and its partners in policy and advocacy, training, health system improvements and community mobilization. It also includes summaries of strategies developed by the SAFE (Skilled Attendance For Everyone) research study to address skilled attendance in five different situations (in Bangladesh, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi and Mexico). The publication highlights the range of approaches and entry points required to address the various constraints to providing skilled delivery care that arise in different contexts. -
Trends in maternal mortality
Trends in maternal mortality
The estimates on maternal mortality presented in this report are the sixth in a series of exercises by the United Nations agencies. Considering that only a third of countries are characterized as having a complete civil registration system with good attribution of cause of death, it is imperative that countries with incomplete civil .registration systems take steps to strengthen those systems. This will tremendously improve the estimation of maternal mortality and monitoring of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5: Improve maternal health. The two targets for assessing MDG 5 are reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by three quarters between 1990 and 2015, and achieving universal access to reproductive health by 2015. -

The challenge of poverty [themanummer]
In this special issue a move beyond aggregation, snapshots and easy labels to understand poverty more. The shortcomings of conventional analyses of poverty and the complexities involved in conceptualizing it in a more meaningful way is highlighted. Female-headed households clearly are disadvantaged in many countries. It is largely informed by the narrow way in which well-being is defined and statistics gathered in conventional poverty research, which also ignores the important dimension of agency that allows women heads to offset gender discrimination as well as the foregone income from a male partner. The extent to which risks for maternal mortality are unequally distributed among women from different socioeconomic backgrounds is highlighted. A research of household level data reveals that poverty and maternal mortality are strongly associated, highlighting the need to move beyond country averages when assessing development performance.- Creator
