Women in the workplace 2016
Women in the workplace 2016
'Based on employee pipeline data from 132 companies, two broad themes emerge this year: .1 ) On average, women are promoted and hired at lower rates than men, so far fewer women become senior leaders. .(2) At more senior levels, we see women shift from line to staff roles, so very few end up on the path to becoming CEO. .Despite modest progress since 2015, women remain underrepresented in the corporate pipeline. At every step, the representation of women declines, and this does not appear to be the result of company-level attrition. On average, the women and men in this study are leaving their organizations at about the same rate.' -

Within each of these areas, various indicators of well-being are explored. While the focus of the report is on the status of Black women, comparisons between Black women and other racial and ethnic groups of women (and men) are presented to contextualize the data. Basic demographic data for each state are also provided. The report concludes with recommendations to improve the status of Black women in the United States.- Creator

Gender gaps in subjective wellbeing
'In all countries of the world, especially in high-income countries, women declare a higher level of life satisfaction than men when they experience similar conditions (for example, pay and working conditions), but score lower on measures that capture short-term positive and negative emotions, and suffer from higher levels of depression. It is true that the advantage of women in terms of happiness and life satisfaction is not uniform along the life cycle: women are less happy than men the age of 18, happier than men afterwards and until their fifties, and less again thereafter. .The positive gap in life satisfaction is not explained by women’s situation on the labour market, their income, education, personality traits or other personal features or living conditions. On the contrary, women would have obvious reasons to be less satisfied with their life and their professional situation than men: they perform longer hours of unpaid work, receive lower wages and are still predominantly clustered into less prestigious occupations. Authors propose two main explanations for this contrasted picture. The first one is that men and women make different use of their time, especially when they live together. The second one is that they have different expectations.'- Creator

Gender equality in power and decision-making
'This report presents the current situation and trends as regards women's and men's engagement in political, economic and social decision-making in the period from 2003 to 2014. It aims to highlight the gender gaps in leadership positions and to identify areas of decision-making where notable progress was made. The report provides a brief review of the EU policy context and research on factors that support or hinder women’s representation in decision-making. The analysis of data is based on the 18 indicators on political and economic decision-making endorsed by the Council in 1999, 2003 and 2008. The analysis is then extended to consider certain general trends in decision-making in other areas, such as academia and research institutions, media and sports organisations, where comparable data are available. It also presents examples of initiatives taken by the Member States to promote women’s participation in leadership positions.'- Creator

Gender practices in the construction of excellence
The scope of this report is on the revealing of gender practices in the construction of academic excellence in recruitment and selection procedures. Core questions for this report are whether the criteria that have been used .play out differently or similarly for male and female candidates, and how constructions of excellence are connected to the reproduction of inequalities in the research system. The construction of excellence is particularly salient for those workers who hold precarious positions, as the label of excellence is the key to their inclusion or exclusion in academia and research. This report presents a comparative analysis across GARCIA beneficiaries in Switzerland, Italy, Iceland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Slovenia. The analysis is based on national research reports from these countries.- Creator

Women at work
This report gives a picture of where women stand today and how they have progressed in the world of work over the last 20 years, and of the root causes of inequalities and how they should be tackled based on what works and the guidance provided by international labour standards. It shows that, despite some encouraging advances, major gender gaps at work remain. Increasing gender parity in educational attainment does not prevent women from being concentrated in middle to lower-paid occupations that reflect traditional gender stereotypes and beliefs about women’s and men’s aspirations and capabilities.- Creator

Gender equity and male engagement
Gender equity and male engagement
In this report, supported by Cartier Philanthropy, ICRW provides a historical overview of the nearly 40-year-old male engagement field, as well as guidance for stakeholders on how to support the funding, design, and implementation of programming that engages men and boys in transforming gender norms. The insights they offer are drawn from published and grey literature, key informant interviews, and a convening of global experts on male engagement programming for gender equity and women’s empowerment. Specifically, this report details approaches, challenges, and best practices for working with men to achieve gender equity in six sectors: violence against women and girls, health, economic empowerment, care work and fatherhood, land rights and agriculture, and political participation. -

Girlhood, not motherhood
'Child marriage is a main contributing factor to adolescent pregnancy. Nine out of ten births to girls aged 15-19 occur within marriage. Just as these girls often have no say about whether, when, and whom they will marry, they also likely have no say about whether and when to begin childbearing. .In response to this situation, UNFPA has made girls’ rights and the prevention of adolescent pregnancy a signature issue in its policy and programming efforts, so that each girl will grow up unencumbered by gender inequality and discrimination, and free to choose the path to a healthy, empowered life.'- Creator

Academic careers and gender inequality
'Careers in science and academia are still subject to discrimination according to the sex. This becomes visible in .the famous scissor-shaped curve, where one can observe a progressive “evaporation” or disappearance of women as they advance in the career: an occurence, which is called the “leaky pipeline” phenomenon. .This report outlines the map of women and men in scientific/academic careers in Austria, Belgium, Iceland, Italy, The Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland and institutes (SSH and STEM fields). It provides a brief transversal analysis of national and organizational data in terms of the leaky pipeline in each studied context. Finally, it suggests some recommendations for tools or implementations that could help in improving the situations described.'- Creator

Unlocking female employment potential in Europe
'With an aging population and declining productivity growth, Europe faces serious challenges to raising its output growth. Adding to these challenges are the various gender gaps in the labor market. Despite significant progress in recent decades, there are still fewer women than men participating in Europe’s labor market, and women are more likely to work part time. Furthermore, a smaller share of women reaches the top rungs of the corporate ladder. .Against this backdrop, this paper investigates the drivers of female labor force participation in Europe as well as what effects greater gender diversity in senior corporate positions might have for Europe’s economic performance. Reexamining the factors driving women’s labor force participation is particularly important because in many European countries the process of closing the gender gap has stalled despite greater gender equality in human capital investment, declining birth rates, changing social norms, and equal legal access to employment opportunities. .For women in Europe the decision to work is not simply a matter of personal choice—policies matter, too. .More women in the labor force paves the way for increased diversity in senior corporate positions and better firm performance. The empirical evidence suggests a strong positive association between firms’ gender diversity in senior positions and corporate financial performance.'- Creator

Women in the workplace 2017
Women in the workplace 2017
Women in the Workplace 2017 is a study of the state of women in corporate America. This research is part of a long-term partnership between McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.Org to give organizations the information they need to promote women’s leadership and foster gender equality. In 2017 222 companies employing more than 12 million people shared their pipeline data and completed a survey of HR practices. In addition, more than 70,000 employees completed a survey designed to explore their experiences regarding gender, opportunity, career, and work-life issues. We also interviewed women from different races and ethnicities at all levels in their organization. The 2017 findings build on reports from 2016 and 2015, as well as similar research conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2012. Since 2012, more than 350 companies have participated— many for multiple years—and close to 200,000 employees have been surveyed. -

European reconciliation package
'In this final policy package a wide range of experts from civil society, policy, research and employers develop a much deeper understanding for the challenges in reconciling work and family life and to showcase different practices, which were used as inspiration for drawing up concrete policy recommendations. In the last few years, there has been a growing demand for policies that support the achievement of the targets on gender equality, closing the gender and pension pay gap, women’s participation in decision making, the Barcelona targets for early childhood education and care, and a better reconciliation between work and family life. In the context of the EU 2020 Strategy, whilst not framed as a headline target, reconciliation measures have nevertheless been recognised at EU level as important means of achieving major policy objectives.' -

Evaluating the gender sensitivity of parliaments
'This toolkit has been designed to improve the way that parliaments around the world advance gender equality and to be models to the communities they represent. The toolkit should help parliaments wishing to evaluate how gendersensitive they are, assess their current practices and policies, identify possible areas for reform, plan for change, and establish mechanisms to monitor progress. .The toolkit draws on IPU’s extensive experience in supporting national parliaments on gender-sensitive reform work. It proposes sets of questions to be tailored to each national context. They are designed to lead to open, constructive discussions. The intention is not to rank parliaments. It is rather to help them identify their strengths and weaknesses in order to determine priorities for strengthening the institution.' -

The global gender gap report 2016
The global gender gap report 2016
'The Global Gender Gap Index presented in this Report seeks to measure one important aspect of gender equality—the relative gaps between women and men across four key areas: health, education, economy and politics. The Index was developed in part to address the need for a consistent and comprehensive measure for gender equality that can track a country’s progress over time. More than a decade of data has revealed that progress is still too slow for realizing the full potential of one half of humanity within our lifetimes. .The Index does not seek to set priorities for countries but rather to provide a comprehensive set of data and a clear method for tracking gaps on critical indicators so that countries may set priorities within their own economic, political and cultural contexts. The Index also points to potential role models by revealing those countries that—within their region or income group—are leaders in distributing resources more equitably between women and men, regardless of the overall level of available resources.' -
