Section 1 describes the status of women in India, starting with the traditional role of women in Indian society prescribed by the Hindu tradition, how the colonial legal infrastructure affected the lives of Indian women and the guarantees of gender justice built into the Indian Constitution. Section 2 describes the history of panchayats, village governing bodies. Section 3 explores the effects of mandatory reservation for women on panchayats, presenting empirical data from various states in India. Section 4 contains personal narratives about the field research of the authors in villages in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.
