This volume explores the figure of the woman reader by contextualizing her within the history of female literacy, the material culture of the book and the ways in which writers and poets of earlier traditions imagined her. It argues that these figures are not mere veneers between a male author and a 'real' male readership, but that, although fictional, they bring several advantages to their vernacular authors, such as orality, the mother tongue, the recollection of the delights of early education, literality, freedom in interpretation, the beauties of ornamentation, a reduced preoccupation with the fixity of the text, the pleasure of making mistakes, dialogue with the other, the extension of desire and new and more flexible forms of authority.

Prodigious muse
Cox argues that women’s writing flourished in the period following 1560, reaching beyond the customary 'feminine' genres of lyric, poetry, and letters to experiment with pastoral drama, chivalric romance, tragedy, and epic. There were few widely practiced genres in this eclectic phase of Italian literature to which women did not turn their hand. .In addition to familiar, secular works by authors such as Isabella Andreini, Moderata Fonte, and Lucrezia Marinella, Cox also discusses important writings that have largely escaped critical interest, including Fonte’s and Marinella’s vivid religious narratives, an unfinished Amazonian epic by Maddalena Salvetti, and the startlingly fresh autobiographical lyrics of Francesca Turina Bufalini.

Literary circles and gender in early modern Europe
Examining the interactions of early modern male and female writers within the context of literary circles, Campbell investigates the ways the querelle des femmes as a discursive rhetorical tradition of praise and blame influenced women who participated in literary circles in Italy, France and England from 1530 to 1650. Campbell pairs selected female and male writers to analyze the way the woman writer responds, deflects or rewrites the male writer's ideological script about women. Her analysis of the confrontation between querelle issues and the new figure of the learned women contributes to a greater understanding of the connections between different national literatures of the period.

Women poets in ancient Greece and Rome
Although Greek society was largely male-dominated, it gave rise to a strong tradition of female authorship. Women ppoets of angient Greece and Rome have long fascinated readers, even though much of their poetry survives only in fragmentary form. The volume covers a broad time span, beginning with Sappho (ca. 630 B.C.E) in archaic Greece and extending to Sulpicia (first century B.C.E.) in Augustan Rome.
