Who will empower the better half?
In a game theoretic framework it can be argued that a gender sensitive institution is an offshoot of certain social conditions, which in most cases need to be acted upon by some anti-establishment catalytic agent. In a society characterized by gender exploitation, catalytic agent can only come exogenously. For a sub-society it is easier to come across such an exogenous catalytic agent. The specific community conditions prevailing in such a sub-society may also prove to be congenial for a catalytic agent to act upon, or even to emerge from. In a larger canvas, however, as the exogenous force transforms into mere endogenous entity, and the society takes on the general character of male-dominance, the space for exogenous agency shrinks. There are, however, three possible escape routes from this closure. Firstly, external effects of women's empowerment in one subsociety on another may snowball. Secondly, the awareness campaign presently underway on a global scale is itself a potent exogenous catalytic agent. Thirdly, general development programs undertaken within a patriarchal order may unwittingly create conditions conducive to feminist struggle.- Creator

New Challenges for the Palestinian Women's Movement
The Palestinian women's movement has faced numerous challenges since the beginning of the twentieth century, when women became an organic component of the national struggle and their activism became part of the heritage of the national movement. Yet the most serious challenge during the last 10 years has been the inner transformation of the Palestinian women's movement from a grassroots struggle to an elite phenomenon.- Creator

Shape up or ship out: Why Millennium Goal No. 3 can not be achieved until the multilateral institutions stop imposing neo-liberal policy on the rest of the world
Gender equality and freedom from the feminisation of poverty is enshrined in many international instruments, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW – 1979), and the Beijing Declaration and Platforms that will undergo its ten year review at the end of this month. The recent UN Millennium Development Project (UNMDP) report also outlines some important strategic priorities in achieving Millennium Goal number three – Gender equality and empowerment of women..- Creator

Changing equations
This paper highlights the importance of the role of women in the economic and public sphere, and also explores the various means and steps that have been taken and further measures that can be taken to empower women and encourage entrepreneurship in developing economies such as India. This paper would thus like to bring to the fore that empowerment of women is as important to an economy as it is for their individual well-being and ultimately their liberation.- Creator

'The misfortune of being black and female'
Concert pianist and teacher Eulalie Domingo used in the two decades following the First World War The Daily Gleaner, Jamaica's leading newspaper, and Public Opinion, a weekly founded in 1937 which advocated self-government, to reflect on the condition of Afro-Jamaican women. Most of these women played an active role in organisations that sought to improve the lives of women of African descent in Jamaican society. This article is not concerned, however, with their activities to change their own lives and that of their less fortunate sisters, but with their discourses about the status of Afro-Jamaican women. It examines besides Eulalie Domingo's articles, writings by the poet, playwright, journalist, and broadcaster Una Marson: the teacher Amy Bailey: the working-class activist Adina Spencer: the teacher and politician Mary Morris-Knibb: the journalist Aimee Webster: and two anonymous authors. As Marson and Bailey were the most prolific writers, the article is mostly concerned with their views on the place and role of Afro-Jamaican women. This article will demonstrate that 'discourse' was as much part of the early Afro-Caribbean women's movement as 'activism' and suggests that one way scholars can usefully investigate early black feminist thought in the Caribbean is by exploring its contradictions.- Creator

Learning to organize globally
'Between 1975 and 1995, a total of four world conferences on women took place under the sponsorship of the United Nations. These mega events were accorded a prominent place in the International/global women’s movement. This paper argues that we need to make a distinction between these two kinds of global organizing for gender equality. The former were sponsored by an international bureaucracy whereas the latter was started by women activists. Clarifying the difference helps to recognize the unique challenges posed by the world conferences for activists of the international/global women’s movement in the following aspects: dealing with logistical challenges, setting global priorities, coordinating international lobbying, and pushing for national implementation. Drawing on personal accounts, organizational records and United Nations documents, the paper explores how women activists adapted to the challengesand what lessons they offered for transnational activism in general.'- Creator

Religious Racism and the Media: Representations of Muslim Women in the Australian Print Media
In analysing two Australian daily newspapers, the Australian and the Advertiser, this article argues that there is a climate of hostility and negativity towards Islam and Muslims currently in operation in the Australian print media. The article highlights specific instances of racism, stereotyping and general negativity towards Islam and Muslims. Examples of negative representations of Islam and Muslims included 'Muslims as terrorists', 'oppressed Muslim women', and 'Islam as a violent, barbaric and backward religion'. The article also discusses the scarcity of positive representations as well as the ambivalence of the few 'positive' representations that did appear during the collection timeframe. This article argues that, given the role and influence of the print media in Australia, daily newspapers are culpable, or at least complicit, in the religious racism experienced by Australian Muslims on a daily basis. Interviews with a number of Muslim women in South Australia (aged 18-30 years) provide arguments that negative media representations not only impact on the ways they are positioned and treated by others in society, but also result in young Muslim women viewing the media with cynicism and mistrust. This has implications for continuing relations between the Australian Muslim community and the Australian media.- Creator

Gender equality: striving for justice in an unequal world [themanummer]
This issue is devoted to areas of concern articulated in the Beijing Platform for Action. The report 'Gender Equality: Striving for Justice in an Unequal World' presents the results of research and analysis concerning macroeconomics, well-being and gender equality: women, work and social policy: women in politics and public life: and gender, armed conflict and the search for peace. The transition of women in politics to advance for gender equality issues and women-friendly policies depends on the effectiveness of women's movements in holding governments accountable, and gender-sensitive good governance. Women's economic activity rates have been rising in most part of the world, yet labour market continue to be segmented by gender. The intensification of women's paid work has been paralleled by a deterioration in the terms and conditions of work. Attention is being paid to civic and political participation of women in Central and Eastern Europe and the challenges of equality and difference.- Creator
