- Description
- Daniels investigates the white supremacist imagination, and argues that the ideology of white supremacist groups is much closer to core American values than most of us would like to believe. The book explores white supremacist ideology through an analysis of over 300 publications from a variety of white supremacist organizations. It examines the discourse of these publications and the ways in which 'whites,' 'blacks,' and 'Jews' are constructed within that discourse.

- Description
- Following the structure of the first edition of Gendered Intersections, this second edition examines the intersections across and between gender, race, culture, class, ability, sexuality, age and geographical location from the perspectives of academics, artists and activists. Using different mediums — academic research, poetry, statistics, visual essays, fiction, emails and music — this collection explores gender through issues such as Aboriginal self-governance, poverty, work, spirituality, globalization and community activism. This new edition brings a greater focus on politics, and gender and the law. It also includes access to a Gendered Intersections website, which contains several performances by poets and a Gendered Intersections Quiz, which highlights the historical and contemporary contributions of women and non-hegemonic men to Canadian society.

- Description
- This book presents a critical study of the ways in which contemporary society understands suicide, exploring suicide across a range of key expert bodies of knowledge. With attention to Durkheim's founding study of suicide, as well as discourses within sociology, law, medicine, psy-knowledge and newsprint media, this book demonstrates that suicide cannot be understood without understanding how gender shapes it, and without giving explicit attention to the manner in which prevailing claims privilege some interpretations of suicide above others. Revealing the masculine and masculinist terms in which our current knowledge of suicide is constructed, the book explores the relationship between our grasp of suicide and problematic ideas connected to the body, agency, violence, race and sexuality.

- Description
- By including the perspectives of minority teachers and students, and by drawing on feminist, queer and anti-racist frameworks, this book rejects the familiar tendency to resort to role modelling as a basis for explaining or addressing boys' disaffection with schooling. The authors argue, on the basis of their research in urban schools in Canada and Australia, that educational policy concerned with male teacher shortage and the plight of disadvantaged minority boys would benefit from engaging with analytic perspectives and empirical literature that takes readers beyond hegemonic discourses of role modelling. The author stresses the need to disarticulate discourses about role modelling from a politics of representation that is committed to addressing the reality of the impact of racial and structural inequalities on both minority teachers and students' participation in the education system.

- Description
- This book examines gender politics during the post-World War II period and the Cold War in the United States and East and West Germany. The authors show how disruptions of older political and social patterns, exposure to new cultures, population shifts, and the rise of consumerism affected gender roles and identities. Comparing all three countries, chapters analyse the ways that gender figured into relations between victor and vanquished and shaped everyday life in both the Western and Soviet blocs. Topics include the gendering of the immediate aftermath of war: the military, politics, and changing masculinities in postwar societies: policies to restore the gender order and foster marriage and family: demobilization and the development of postwar welfare states: and debates over sexuality (gay and straight).

- Des Jardins explores the work of a wide variety of women historians, both professional and amateur, white and nonwhite. These historians addressed new questions and represented social groups traditionally omitted from the historical record, such as workers, African Americans, Native Americans, and religious minorities. Assessing the historical contributions of Mary Ritter Beard, Zora Neale Hurston, Angie Debo, Mari Sandoz, Lucy Salmon, Mary McLeod Bethune, Dorothy Porter, Nellie Neilson and many others, Des Jardins argues that women working within the confines of the historical enterprise collectively brought the new perspectives of social and cultural history to the study of a multifaceted American past.

- Born in Paris but having grown up in Africa, Denis explores in her films the legacies of French colonialism and the complex relationships between sexuality, gender, and race. From the adult woman who observes her past as a child in Cameroon to the Lithuanian immigrant who arrives in Paris and watches a serial killer to the disgraced French Foreign Legionnaire attempting to make sense of his past, the subjects of Denis's films continually revisit themes of watching, bearing witness, and making contact, as well as displacement, masculinity, and the migratory subject

- In this oration Gouda poses three questions for the feminist movement. First, how can the historical profession, in particular, and humanistic and social science scholarship, in general, be transformed in an integrated fashion by incorporating a gender analysis? Second, how to recognize that prescriptions of masculinity and femininity are far from universal and timeless? Third, how 'whiteness' as a reference to the skin color, tends to have variable meanings that are grounded in locally specific patterns of authority and subservience.

- Description
- This book argues that the emergence of multiracialism during the 1990s was determined by underlying and unacknowledged gender norms. Opening with a germinal moment for multiracialism Ibrahim examines how the shifting status of racial hero for both black and multiracial communities makes sense only by means of an account of masculinity. Ibrahim looks across historical events and memoirs—beginning with the Loving v. Virginia case in 1967 when miscegenation laws were struck down—to reveal that gender was the starting point of an analytics that made categorical multiracialism, and multiracial politics, possible. Producing a genealogy of multiracialism’s gendered basis allows Ibrahim to focus on a range of stakeholders whose interests often ran against the grain of what the multiracial movement of the 1990s often privileged: the sanctity of the heteronormative family, the labor of child rearing, and more precise forms of racial tabulation—all of which, when taken together, could form the basis for creating so-called neutral personhood.

- Description
- The late Enlightenment saw an acute transformation of gender definitions in the German cultural areas of Europe, leading to a 'polarization' of the sexes. Where early modern cultural norms had once affirmed a multitude of differences within society, modernity was founded on an ideal of equality which in practice applied only to white male citizens. The new dichotomies of gender, socioeconomic status, and race created by this practice held tremendous social implications for all Germans. Law and science inscribed a new set of morals with gendered virtues and social spheres. Masculinity and femininity came to be understood as opposites based in nature. The transformed gender system fuelled an epochal social reordering. .This book recounts the ways in which this drama played out in German-speaking Europe during the transitional period between 1750 and 1830. Scholars examine the effect of gender in numerous realms of German life, including law, urban politics, marriage, religion, literature, natural science, fashion, and personal relationships.

- This book engages scholarly essays, poems, and creative writings that examine the meanings of race, gender, and sexual orientation as interlocking systems of oppression. Each chapter in this volume critically interrogates the notion of identity as socially constructed, yet interconnected and shaped by cultural associations. The shaping of an individual’s identity, communication, and worldview can be read, shaped, and understood through life, art, popular culture, mass media, and cross-cultural interactions, among other things.

- Description
- Kris Paap worked for nearly three years as a carpenter’s apprentice on a variety of job sites, closely observing her colleagues’ habits, expressions, and attitudes. As a woman in an overwhelmingly male and stereotypically 'macho' profession, Paap uses her experiences to reveal the ways that gender, class, and race interact in the construction industry. She shows how the stereotypes of construction workers and their overt displays of sexism, racism, physical strength, and homophobia are not 'just how they are,' but rather culturally and structurally mandated enactments of what it means to be a man and a worker in America. The significance of these worker performances is particularly clear in relation to occupational safety: when the pressures for demonstrating physical masculinity are combined with a lack of protection from firing, workers are forced to ignore safety procedures in order to prove that they are 'man enough' to do the job. Thus these mandated performances have real, and sometimes deadly, consequences for individuals, the entire working class, and the strength of the union movement.
