- Description
- This publication shows how free, single women navigated life in a busy slave-based river-port town before and during the Civil War, and how these women transitioned during Reconstruction, emancipation, and thereafter. It examines how free, single women in one city (including prostitutes, entrepreneurs, and elite plantation ladies) coped with life unencumbered, or unprotected, by husbands. The book pays close attention to the laws affecting southern gender and sociocultural traditions, focusing especially on how the town’s free, single women maneuvered adroitly but guardedly within the legal arena in which they lived.

- Description

- Description
- Single men and single women are perceived in very different ways. Bachelors are mostly seen as having elected to be 'footloose and fancy free.' Single women, however, over the past two centuries, have been viewed as abnormal, neurotic, or simply undesirable--attitudes that result in part from the long standing belief that a single woman would not have chosen her life. This collection of essays attempts to correct that bias by presenting a more complex view of single women. The writers give a broad definition of singleness, one that includes women who never married, those who co-habit but are legally denied the right to marry, divorcees, and widows. They describe women who defiantly voted in political elections, single mothers who rejected dependency on public assistance programs, women who successfully ran businesses, and others who found fulfillment in charitable work.

- Description
- Town rules and customs, as well as police and guilds’ regulations, affected women’s participation in the urban economy: the formally recognized and legally accepted power of women was very limited. The book draws attention to how women navigated these gendered terrains. As the book demonstrates, 'exclusion' is too strong a word for the realities of women’s everyday lives. Frequently guild and corporate regulations were more about situating women and regulating their activities, rather than preventing them from operating in the urban economy. Similarly corporate structures, which were under stress, found flexible strategies to incorporate women who through their own initiative and activities put pressure on the systems.

- Description
- This book opens a window into the lives of British spinsters in the mid-seventeenth to mid-nineteenth centuries, assessing the opportunities open to them and the restrictions placed upon them within different social classes, occupations, and periods. Hill examines how often spinsters were able to earn enough money to live independently, She looks at the part single women played in religious organisations and the role of friendship and letter-writing in their daily lives. She describes the nature of close relationships between women, some lesbian but many others not. Exploring the spinsters' possibilities of escape from restrictive lives, particularly by emigration or crossdressing, she discusses how successful these were. She provides details about the degree of surveillance single women suffered from the authorities and how often they were seen as a threat to social order. Finally she addresses the question of whether all spinsters of this era were suffering victims or potential viragoes, or neither.

- Description
- During the last half of the nineteenth century, a number of social and economic factors converged that resulted in the rural village of Deerfield, Massachusetts becoming almost entirely female. This drastic shift in population presents a unique lens through which to study gender roles and social relations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This can provide new insight to the study of gender relations throughout other historical periods as well. .Through an examination of both historical and archaeological evidence, the author presents a clear picture of the gendered social relations in Deerfield over the span of seventy years. While gender relations in urban settings have been studied extensively, this work provides the same level of examination to gender relations in a rural setting. Likewise, where previous studies have often focused only on relations between married men and women, the case of Deerfield provides insight into the experiences of single women, particularly widows and “spinsters”.

- Description
- This book investigates the lives of unmarried white women in the nineteenth century within the society of the American South. These single women were not subject to the laws and customs of coverture and therefore lived with greater autonomy than married women. Molloy contends that the Civil War proved a catalyst for accelerating personal, social, economic and legal changes for these women. Being a single woman during this time often meant living a nuanced life, operating within a tight framework of traditional gender conventions. The author describes these themes and their effects on female life: femininity, family, work, friendship, law and property. The relatively overlooked population of single women in both the urban and plantation slaveholding South is studied by examining letters and diaries of more than three hundred white, native-born, southern women.
