- Description
- Popular and academic representations of the free mulatta concubine depict women of mixed black African and white racial descent as defined by their sexual attachment to white men, and thus they offer evidence of the means to and dimensions of their freedom within Atlantic slave societies. In this book the author contends that the uniformity of these representations conceals the figure’s centrality to the practices and production of diaspora. She argues that the concubine figure’s manifestation as both historical subject and African diasporic goddess indicates her centrality to understanding how free and enslaved black subjects performed gender, theorized race and freedom, and produced their own diasporic identities. The book traces the free mulatta concubine across the physical and imaginative landscapes of three Atlantic sites: Gorée Island, New Orleans, and Saint Domingue (Haiti).

- Looking forward to the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, this collection of essays looks back at the decades since women won the right to vote to analyze the changes, developments, and even continuities in women's roles in the broad political sphere. Ultimately, the book asks two questions about the last 100 years of women's suffrage: How did the Nineteenth Amendment alter the American political system? and How has women's engagement in politics changed over the last 100 years?

She examined the entire spectrum of early nineteenth-century women's groups - Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish: African American and white: middle and working class - to illuminate the ways in which race, religion, and class could bring women together in pursuit of common goals or drive them apart.

- Description
- Without leading troops in battle or wielding political power, five women (Clara Barton, Sarah Josepha Hale, Julia Ward Howe, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Harriet Tubman) profoundly influenced the start of the Civil War and its progress throughout as North and South clashed. Coming from varying backgrounds and with different skills, the women performed acts embodying truth, freedom, compassion, inspiration, and conciliation that helped change the course of the war. They were all independent, resourceful, and intelligent women who overcame the social and political climate of mid-nineteenth century America to play important, game-changing roles. . .This book explores the awakenings of these five women and how their lives were affected by the war. Each of the five women's stories is filled with times of joy, frustration, success, confrontation, disappointment, and satisfaction that shaped them as they found purpose and fulfilment during a devastating war.

- White settlers in the United States, who saw themselves as pioneers, were inspired by the state experiments of Australia and New Zealand that helped shape their commitment to an active state, women’s and workers’ rights. Both settler societies defined themselves as New World, against Old World feudal and aristocratic societies and Indigenous peoples deemed backward and primitive. In conversations, conferences and collaboration, transpacific networks were animated by a sense of racial kinship and investment in social justice. While “Asiatics” and “Blacks” would be excluded, Indians and Aborigines would be assimilated or absorbed. The political mobilizations of Indigenous progressives?in the Society of American Indians and the Australian Aborigines’ Progressive Association?testified to the power of Progressive thought but also to its repressive underpinnings.

- Field argues that attaining adulthood--and the associated political rights, economic opportunities, and sexual power that come with it--became a common goal for both white and African American feminists between the American Revolution and the Civil War. The idea that black men and all women were more like children than adult white men proved difficult to overcome, however, and continued to serve as a foundation for racial and sexual inequality for generations.

This collection employs approaches to study both the causes that have united American women and the conflicts that have divided them. Some essays uncover little-known aspects of women’s history, while others offer a fresh take on familiar events and figures, from Rosa Parks to Take Back the Night marches. Spanning the antebellum era to the present day, these essays convey the long histories and ongoing relevance of topics ranging from women’s immigration to incarceration, from acts of cross-dressing to the activism of feminist mothers.

- Description
- Between 1879 and 1934, the United States government made a concerted effort to dissolve tribes by dividing communally-held lands and forcing American Indians to adopt Euro-American practices. Three progressive women seized a wave of national fascination with American Indians to fashion themselves as public storytellers and challenge the national drive to assimilate indigenous peoples. This book focuses on these women: white writer and activist Helen Hunt Jackson, the Paiute lecturer, educator, and political activist Sarah Winnemucca, whose Life Among the Piutes is believed to be the first Native American woman's autobiography: and Victoria Howard. Senier analyzes the texts of these three women closely. She convincingly argues that these complex texts have been misinterpreted as supporting the policy of assimilation, when they actually opposed the male, authoritarian voice.

Not only did white women often refuse to cede ownership of their slaves to their husbands, they employed management techniques that were as effective and brutal as those used by slave-owning men. White women actively participated in the slave market, profited from it, and used it for economic and social empowerment.

- Description
- In the years before the Civil War, popular conceptions of African American men shifted dramatically. The savage slave featured in 1830s' novels and stories gave way by the 1850s to the humble black martyr. This reshaping of black masculinity in American culture occurred at the same time that the reading and writing of popular narratives were emerging as largely feminine enterprises. In a society where women wielded little official power, white female authors exalted white femininity, using narrative forms such as autobiographies, novels, short stories and plays, by stressing differences that made white women appear superior to male slaves. This book argues that white women played a pivotal role in the demasculinization of black men and had a vital impact on the political landscape of antebellum and Civil War-era America through their powerful influence on popular culture.

- Description
- This book analyzes works in the archive of antislavery illustrated books published from 1800 to 1852 alongside other visual materials that depict enslavement. Cutter argues that some illustrated narratives attempt to shift a viewing reader away from pity and spectatorship into a mode of empathy with the enslaved. She also contends that some illustrated books characterize the enslaved as obtaining a degree of control over narrative and lived experiences. Through exploration of works such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin, as well as ones by Amelia Opie, Henry Bibb, and Henry Box Brown, she delineates a mode of radical empathy that attempts to destroy divisions between the enslaved individual and the free white subject .

- Description
- This book investigates the lives of unmarried white women in the nineteenth century within the society of the American South. These single women were not subject to the laws and customs of coverture and therefore lived with greater autonomy than married women. Molloy contends that the Civil War proved a catalyst for accelerating personal, social, economic and legal changes for these women. Being a single woman during this time often meant living a nuanced life, operating within a tight framework of traditional gender conventions. The author describes these themes and their effects on female life: femininity, family, work, friendship, law and property. The relatively overlooked population of single women in both the urban and plantation slaveholding South is studied by examining letters and diaries of more than three hundred white, native-born, southern women.

- Description
- The author researched the history of the debutante ritual, a highly choreographed tribal rite. It begins in England six hundred years ago when wealthy fathers needed an efficient way to find appropriate husbands for their daughters. She traces the social seasons of young women on both sides of the Atlantic (London, Philadelphia, the American South, New York), often through their own words from diaries, letters, and interviews that Richardson conducted at contemporary balls. While exploring why the debutante tradition persists - and spread to Russia, China, and others nations - the author uncovered the cultural influence on the lives of daughters and ideas of women, courtship and marriage.

- Contributors to this illustrated volume focus on the influence of Southernwhite women on the fund-raising campaigns to build monuments, architectural memorials, and outdoor ritual spaces as means to express their deeply felt perspectives about the Civil War. Other contributors explore the creative alternative ways in which people outside the white southern culture - African Americans and Union supporters - wrote their very different histories on the southern landscape. The authors trace the origins, objectives, and changing consequences of Conferderate monuments over time and the dynamics of individuals and organisations that sponsored them.
