- Description

- Description
- The aim of this book is to make visible the intentionality behind the 'forgetting' of European women's contributions during the period between the two world wars in the context of politics, culture and society. It also seeks to analyse women's agency in the construction and reconstruction of Europe and its nation states after the First World War, and thus to articulate ways in which the writing of women's history necessarily entails the rewriting of everyone's history. .By showing that the erasure of women's texts from literary and cultural history was not accidental but was ideologically motivated, the essays explicitly and implicitly contribute to debates surrounding canon formation. Other important topics are women's political activism during the period, antifascism, the contributions made by female journalists, the politics of literary production, genre, women's relationship with and contributions to the avant-garde, women's professional lives, and women's involvement in voluntary associations. The chapter about the Netherlands is about Dutch women writers between the wars.

- Description
- Defining the kitchen as a complex technological artifact as important as computers, cars, and nuclear missiles, the book examines the ways in which a range of social actors in Europe shaped the kitchen as both ideological construct and material practice. These actors—from manufacturers and modernist architects to housing reformers and feminists—constructed and domesticated the technological innovations of the postwar kitchen. The home became a 'mediation junction' in which women users and others felt free to advise producers from the consumer's point of view. In essays illustrated by striking period photographs, the contributors to Cold War Kitchen consider such topics as Soviet consumers' ambivalent responses to the American dream kitchen argued over by Nixon and Khrushchev: the Frankfurter Küche, a European modernist kitchen of the interwar period (and its export to Turkey when its designer fled the Nazis): and the British state-subsidized kitchen design so innovative that it was mistaken for a luxury American product. The concluding essays challenge the received wisdom of past interpretations of the kitchen debate.

- Description
- This book tells the story of the interactions and connections of black colonial migrants and white feminists in the social, cultural, and political world of interwar Paris. Between world war I and II, Paris attracted inhabitants from Africa, the Caribbean and the United States and became both their home and a site for political engagement. The book explores why and how black colonial migrants and white feminists were denied certain rights, how they suffered from sensationalist images in popular culture and how they fought for equality in ways that were often interpreted as politically subversive.

- Description
- Laura Levine Frader’s synthesis of labor history and gender history brings to the fore failures in realizing the French social model of equality for all citizens. Challenging previous scholarship, she argues that the male breadwinner ideal was stronger in France in the interwar years than scholars have typically recognized, and that it had negative consequences for women’s claims to the full benefits of citizenship. She describes how ideas about masculinity, femininity, family, and work affected post–World War I reconstruction, policies designed to address France’s postwar population deficit, and efforts to redefine citizenship in the 1920s and 1930s. She demonstrates that gender divisions and the male breadwinner ideal were reaffirmed through the policies and practices of labor, management, and government. The social model that France implemented in the 1920s and 1930s incorporated fundamental social inequalities.

- Description
- The era between World Wars I and II set East-Central Europe on a path of a modernization that was opening up numerous possibilities for challenging the regions traditional politics and established gender roles. In interwar Yugoslavia, questions of ethnically driven nationalism dominated the public discourse, but the modernizing processes of industrialization and rising consumerism also opened up a small public space for the development of the womens press. The intuitive and change-driven Croatian journalist and novelist Marija Juri Zagorka led this parallel and alternative public discourse in Yugoslavias most popular interwar womens magazine, Zenski list. This is a book about this magazine, its editor, and its readers as well as about the alternative visions of modernity that they were offering to the magazines readers, both throughout Yugoslavia and within the diasporic communities in the United States and Canada during the thirteen years of the magazines existence from 1925-1938.

- Description
- In the early twentieth century the term 'feminist' was used by self-consciously 'modern' men and women, to distinguish their ideas from those of 'the women's movement', and even to adopt anti-suffrage positions. In this study of twentieth-century feminism as an Anglo-American phenomenon Delap offers a perspective on the politics of gender during this period. She explores the intellectual history and cultural politics of Anglo-American feminism in a way that challenges the reader to rethink the nature of both the 'avant-garde' and 'feminism'. Focusing on the development of transnational feminisms within Edwardian and interwar print culture, feminist political argument is placed at the centre of an account of modernism, highlighting some unexpected and often uncomfortable components, including the feminist fascination with individualism and egoism: ambivalence over World War One: utopian thinking and captivation by the idea of 'the simple life': anti-Semitism: sexual radicalism: and ideas about 'the superwoman'.
