The first section of this note focuses on the social creation of motherhood. The second section discusses the essentialism of the feminist response to motherhood and demonstrate the similarities to the conventional ideology. Next, the author turns to the lesbian experience as a means to stretch the boundaries of what our culture defines motherhood to be. The final section examines the connection of these ideas to the context of surrogacy.
