- Description
- '78 states worldwide continue to criminalise same-sex sexual behaviour, and due to the legal legacies of the British Empire, 42 of these – more than half – are in the Commonwealth of Nations. Lately many states have seen the emergence of new sexual nationalisms, leading to increased enforcement of colonial sodomy laws against men, new criminalisations of sex between women and discrimination against transgender people. This publication challenges these developments as the first publication to focus on experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) and all non-heterosexual people in the Commonwealth and offers the most internationally extensive analysis to date of the global struggle for decriminalisation of same-sex sexual behaviour and relationships.'

- 'The ‘due diligence principle’, as it is commonly termed, holds States accountable for human rights abuses committed not only by the State or State actors, but also by non-State actors. Violence against women (VAW) is most often perpetrated by non-State actors — for example, a close male relative or an intimate partner. The due diligence principle is a critical tool in the formulation of accountability. By making the State accountable for violence perpetrated by non-State actors, public international law recognizes that VAW, regardless of who commits it, constitutes human rights violations. Due diligence has also ruptured the artificial ‘public/private sphere’ divide and the dichotomy between State and non-State actors, as States are now not only permitted but .obliged to enter the so-called ‘private sphere’ where most instances of VAW take place and where States have traditionally been barred.'

- Description
- 'Gender equality and the protection of human rights, especially of children and those most vulnerable, are fundamental principles of the United Nations. These rights cut across all aspects of the UN’s work and are crucial to long-term progress, including achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. .Yet in our compartmentalized world, the rights of women and those of children have often been promoted in isolation from one another. Separate international treaties have been forged and specialized UN agencies, government ministries and non-governmental organizations created for whom women or children are the primary focus. The purpose of this advocacy booklet is to explore the human rights links between these two groups, the practical implications of considering them together, and four areas for strategic action.'

- Description
- Women’s rights organisations (WROs) are organisations led by women working to advance gender equality and women’s rights. They vary in focus and scale but are informed and inspired by an understanding of the context in which women live, and what needs to change. They organise as women but recognise that women experience .many layers of inequality shaped by age, ability, ethnicity, race, HIV status, sexual orientation, religion and other social differences, and so have diverse needs and interests. A feminist analysis of how these inequalities intersect with gender inequality, and of the power structures which maintain women’s inequality to men, is at the core of WROs’ work.
