- Description
- Crutcher explores the fundamental conflicts between international human rights law and Islamic law as implemented by Sharia courts. She cites the UN Charter, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, jus cogens and customary international law, and the human rights treaty regimes. By approaching the conflict through a variation on feminist theory she provides an alternative to the universalist/cultural relativist dichotomy that may polarize the dialogue between proponents of locally implemented Islamic law and supporters of the theory of inherent universal human rights.

- Description
- The author examines how it is possible for a court to craft an injunction that protects listeners, protesters, and the Constitution itself. Part I assesses the pre-Madsen state of injunctive relief in cases involving free speech. Part II traces the rise through the lower courts of the two most important Supreme Court decisions on this point: Madsen v. Women’s Health Center, Inc. and Schenck v. Pro-Choice Network of Western New York. Part III addresses the questions: are speech-restrictive injunctions necessarily content-based? Who can be enjoined? Are injunctions really deserving of higher scrutiny than statutes? Can the reviewing court raise government interests that the government has not pled, and what function can those state interests play in the analysis? What factual findings are necessary to support a speech-restrictive injunction? as analyzed in Madsen, Schenck, and a more recent case involving statutory restrictions on speech, Hill v. Colorado.

- In this article authors uses exchange theory to examine the status and familial interactions of women in rural Bangladesh throughout their lives. Their status remains low but it does vary according to a highly institutionalized pattern of family-based social expectations. Although the institutions defining a woman's status seem to be stable, they are also changing because of the society's exposure to recent worldwide advances in family planning and health care.

- Description
- Downsizing programs are an important part of many public sector reforms supported by the World Bank. This issue describes how this was done in Vietnam and provides links to a general utility, that can be used to design equitable severance packages in any country. Downsizing can have differing effects on male and female employees for two reasons. First, because women and men typically occupy different positions, layoffs are rarely distributed evenly among male and female employees. Second, there tend to be systematic differences in the welfare loss experienced by laid-off men compared to laid-off women. Experience in a range of countries shows that, in most cases, women suffer greater losses than men in both income and non-monetary benefits. Women who are laid off from public sector jobs often have more difficulty than their male colleagues finding a new job. In Vietnam, a year after layoffs, only 14% of women had found new jobs, compared to 22% of men

- Description
- In this article the author seeks to examine the ways in which gay and lesbian struggles are shaped by their political and national context. The author has analyzed the public debate concerning assisted insemination in relation to same-sex parenting and single mothers in Denmark as it took place during the years 1997-2002, and, as such, this article offers a reading of sexual politics in a country which is often portrayed as one of the most liberal ones when it comes to gay and lesbian rights. The author further shows the way in which the rights agenda can prove problematic and limited, in relation to issues of family and parenting. Thus she points to the inherent problems of a universalized conception of gay and lesbian struggles and find it pertinent to consider how organizing frameworks such as gender, sexuality and nationality determine the site of resistance and the articulation of what can be deemed political.
