- Description
- In recent years, there has been substantial progress on LGBTQ civil rights in the United States. We are now in a time of incredible political uncertainty for queer people. This book provides an introduction to mainstream LGBTQ movements in the US, illustrating the many forms that LGBTQ activism has taken since the mid-twentieth century. The book covers a range of topics, including the Stonewall uprising and gay liberation, AIDS politics, queer activism, marriage equality fights and bisexual and transgender justice. Stulberg explores how marginalized communities have used a wide range of political and cultural tools to create change. The five key themes that guide the book are assimilationism and liberationism as strategies for equality, the possibilities of legal change, the role of art and popular culture in social change, the interconnectedness of social movements and the role of privilege in movement organizing.

- Description
- Table of contents available online. This book offers a cartography of the sentimental in shaping North America in the nineteenth century. It puts forward a critical method for thinking about sentimentalism as a genre, mode, and political and affective outlook people have used to cultivate a sense of intimacy across distance, an 'affective geography'. It focuses on the experiences and perspectives of those whose bodies, labour, and sovereignty have been occupied to ground others' lives and world-making projects. Bringing literary and rhetorical studies together with critical race and gender theory, cultural geography, American studies, affect studies and the new materialism, this book lays out sentimentalism's usefulness to settler colonialism and the maintenance of racialized labour. The book also charts sentimentalism's value as a means of resisting geographic displacement and both physical and metaphysical dispossession. Philosophers and rhetoricians regard grounds as necessary conditions for argumentation. This book treats grounds as also geopolitical, geoaffective, and geophysical, mapping them as alternately shaky, unsettling, and stabilizing. With analyses of the narrative and continent in works by Sojourner Truth, Harriet E. Wilson, Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins, Nathaniel Hawthorne 'The scarlet letter', and others: and the white, sentimental constructions of Indian Removal and the 'Trail of Tears'.

- Description

- Description
- Marjorie Hillis, daughter of a Brooklyn preacher, was poised for reinvention when she moved to the big city to start a life of her own. Gone were the days of the flirty flapper: ladies of Depression-era New York embraced a new icon: the independent working woman. Hillis was already a success at Vogue when she published a radical self-help book in 1936: Live Alone and Like It: A Guide for the Extra Woman. With Dorothy Parker–esque wit, she urged spinsters, divorcées, and “old maids” to shed derogatory labels and take control of their lives.
