- Description
- This book examines the links between beauty and politics in the Anglophone, spanning from Kingston to London. It traces the origins and transformation of female beauty contests in the British Caribbean from 1929 to 1970, through the development of cultural nationalism, race-conscious politics and decolonisation. The beauty contest is used to illuminate the persistence of racial supremacy, the advance of consumer culture and the negotiation of race and nation through the idealised performance of cultured, modern beauty. Modern Caribbean femininity was intended to be politically functional but also commercially viable and subtly eroticised. The discussion surrounding beauty competitions reveals that femininity was used to shape ideas about Caribbean modernity, citizenship, and political and economic freedom.

- Description
- This book charts the history of the women's liberation movement in Scotland in the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century. Based on documentary evidence and oral testimony from feminist activists, this book argues for the importance of looking at the movement from the grassroot perspective, as well as locating the struggle for women's liberation in the local context, shifting emphasis away from large cities like London. The book uncovers the reach of the movement and considers what case studies of women's liberation e.g. on abortion and violence against women can tell us about the ways in which the development of the movement has been portrayed. In the appendices: short biographies of oral history interviewees and the seven demands of the women's libration movement in Britain. Paperback. First published in hardback 2014.

- Description
- This book explores the often contradictory representations of and advice given to Irish women in Irish magazines published in the 1960s, such as Woman’s Way, Woman’s View, Woman’s Choice and Young Woman. These magazines guided readers on how to attract a husband, maintain their marriage and raise a family, but they were also manuals for modern living: they addressed and debated such women’s issues as the body and reproductive rights, working wives and equal pay. They also drew attention to the needs of women otherwise on the margins of society – widows, unmarried mothers and single women. This book provides an analysis of the ways that the magazines subverted traditional understandings of the role of women, domestic ideology and their position in society. It considers the motivations of editors, the role of readers and the influence of advertisers in shaping complex debates about women, their lives and their rights.
