- 'Careers in science and academia are still subject to discrimination according to the sex. This becomes visible in .the famous scissor-shaped curve, where one can observe a progressive “evaporation” or disappearance of women as they advance in the career: an occurence, which is called the “leaky pipeline” phenomenon. .This report outlines the map of women and men in scientific/academic careers in Austria, Belgium, Iceland, Italy, The Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland and institutes (SSH and STEM fields). It provides a brief transversal analysis of national and organizational data in terms of the leaky pipeline in each studied context. Finally, it suggests some recommendations for tools or implementations that could help in improving the situations described.'

- American prosperity and military superiority cannot be maintained with the current shortage of scientists with advanced degrees. Approximately ten percent of full professors in the science, technology and medical disciplines in the United States, and four percent of full professors in physics and engineering, are women, one of the lowest rates among highly developed nations. Top scientists with African-American, Latino, or American Indian ancestry are barely represented. Ultimately, the solution to this gender imbalance is to recruit more native-born women and underrepresented minorities for senior positions in American science. First, we need to attract more women and minorities to pursue advanced degrees. Equally important are new tools to evaluate scientists throughout their careers to replace the unreliable simple count of publications. It merely measures the number of collaborators of a scientist, where men have an overwhelming advantage. Drawing primarily on the literature in program evaluation, the author presents two proposed metrics that would more accurately represent the research contributions of women scholars.

- Authors propose a new Typology of Gendered Pipelines that provides a multi-level, multi-dimensional and comparative analytical framework of leaky pipelines and interrelated phenomena in Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Iceland, Switzerland and Slovenia and research institutions. Along with previous studies and with a number of contemporary European studies, the GARCIA project establishes that the moving away of women from the scientific or academic path, leading to higher positions does not happen so simply as one could imagine at first glance, and that rather than adopting monocausality, we have to take a more composite view of causes and effects when thinking about the “Leaky Pipeline” and other phenomena. When looking at gender policies, under the hood of “gender equality” these have so far also focussed in a rather epidermic way on improving figures and representations in professorships and leadership positions (albeit still without much effect).
