- Description
- By charting the cultural trajectory of sex in America since the end of World War II,this book reveals how the America's continual woes with sexuality helped makethe country an anxious, insecure people. The sex lives of many, perhaps most Americans have been in a perpetual state of crisis, a constant source of concern. In tracing the cultural trajectory of sex in society, Samuel illustrates the bipolar approach to sexuality: low libido and sex addiction emerged as common disorders, and sex scandal after sex scandal has made headlines, especially over the last couple of years. Only money has surpassed sex as a source of stress for Americans: indeed, sex has come to be seen and treated as a commodity.

- Description
- In these 88 brief essays, the author writes about social and political issues like abortion, welfare reform, affirmative action, gun rights and control. Nor is she reluctant to turn her gaze close to home, to the gap between the Nation's high-minded principles and its largely lily-white editorial offices, for example, in her discussion of various liberal hypocrisies. Her newly written introduction calls upon feminists at the millennium to kick-start the 'stalled revolution' with renewed demands for change that, she says, would further social justice, and themselves transform those who articulate them. If there is anything to regret in this collection, it is that columns written seven years ago remain fresh today, so little progress having been made toward resolving the issues they raise.

- Description
- This book shows that one of the key-developments in political activism since the 1980s has been the emergence of conservative women's organizations. This began in the Reagan era. And while firebrands like Ann Coulter and Phyllis Schlafly may be the public face of rightwing women's activism, a handful of large and established women's organizations have proven to be the most effective promoters of the conservative agenda. It focuses on the most prominent of these groups, Concerned Women for America and the Independent Women's Forum, to reveal how they are using feminist rhetoric for conservative ends: outlawing abortion, restricting pornography, and bolstering the traditional family. Schreiber illustrates how conservative activists are often the beneficiaries of the very feminist politics they oppose. She also demolishes the believe that conservatism holds no appeal to women and that modern conservatism is hostile to the very notion of women's activism.
