- Description
- In this book Murphy's initial focus on the alternative health practices developed by radical feminists in the United States during the 1970s and 1980s opens into a sophisticated analysis of the transnational entanglements of American empire, population control, neoliberalism, and late-twentieth-century feminisms. Murphy concentrates on the technoscientific means—the technologies, practices, protocols, and processes—developed by feminist health activists. She argues that by politicizing the technical details of reproductive health, alternative feminist practices aimed at empowering women were also integral to late-twentieth-century biopolitics.

- Description
- In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, the mantle of feminist elect has descended on Hillary Clinton and most mainstream feminist leaders and organizations endorse her. In this atmosphere, dissent seems tantamount to political betrayal. In this book feminists contest this simplistic reading of the candidate. A look at Hillary Clinton’s track record on welfare, Wall Street, criminal justice, education, and war reveals that she has advanced laws and policies that have done real harm to the lives of women and children across the country and the globe.

- Description
- By charting the cultural trajectory of sex in America since the end of World War II,this book reveals how the America's continual woes with sexuality helped makethe country an anxious, insecure people. The sex lives of many, perhaps most Americans have been in a perpetual state of crisis, a constant source of concern. In tracing the cultural trajectory of sex in society, Samuel illustrates the bipolar approach to sexuality: low libido and sex addiction emerged as common disorders, and sex scandal after sex scandal has made headlines, especially over the last couple of years. Only money has surpassed sex as a source of stress for Americans: indeed, sex has come to be seen and treated as a commodity.

- Description
- A feminist, an activist, a woman without a college education, Midge Costanza was one of the unlikeliest of White House insiders. Yet in 1977 she became the first female Assistant to the President for Public Liaison under Jimmy Carter, emerging as a prominent focal point of the American culture wars. Tasked with bringing the views of special interest groups to the president, Costanza championed progressive causes even as Americans grew increasingly divided on the very issues for which she fought. In this book Mattingly chronicles Costanza's dramatic rise and fall as a public figure, from her initial popularity to her ultimate clashes with Carter and his aides. While Costanza challenged Carter to support abortion rights, gay and lesbian rights, and feminist policies, Carter faced increased pressure to appease the interests of emerging Religious Right.

- Description
- In these 88 brief essays, the author writes about social and political issues like abortion, welfare reform, affirmative action, gun rights and control. Nor is she reluctant to turn her gaze close to home, to the gap between the Nation's high-minded principles and its largely lily-white editorial offices, for example, in her discussion of various liberal hypocrisies. Her newly written introduction calls upon feminists at the millennium to kick-start the 'stalled revolution' with renewed demands for change that, she says, would further social justice, and themselves transform those who articulate them. If there is anything to regret in this collection, it is that columns written seven years ago remain fresh today, so little progress having been made toward resolving the issues they raise.

- Description
- Forty years after the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision legalizing abortion, Roe v. Wade continues to make headlines. This book presents an account of cultural and political responses to the landmark 1973 ruling in the decade that followed. The grassroots activists who shaped the discussion after Roe were far more fluid and diverse than the partisans dominating the debate today. In the early years after the decision, advocates on either side of the abortion battle sought common ground on issues from pregnancy discrimination to fetal research. Abortion rights proponents were insensitive to larger questions of racial and class injustice, and expose as caricature the idea that abortion opponents were inherently antifeminist. But over time, “pro-abortion” and “anti-abortion” positions hardened into “pro-choice” and “pro-life” categories in response to political pressures and compromises.

- Description
- The past twenty years have witnessed a renewal of interest in feminist activism. In part this has been a response to neoliberal and neoconservative attacks on the gains made by feminists during the 1960s and 70s.This study adds a comparative dimension to the ongoing analysis of feminism and feminist activism by mapping, analysing and theorising third wave feminisms in the US and Britain. It explores third wave feminisms by situating them within a specific political context, neoliberalism, and in relation to feminist theories of intersectionality, both of which present radical opportunities and practical challenges for feminism and the feminist movement.

- Description
- More than three decades of debate about abortion has been largely a battle of rights - the reproductive rights of women, on the one hand, versus the rights of the unborn, on the other. This collection of essays examines the central pro-abortion claim, that whatever the status of the unborn, the very well-being of women is dependent on the legal right to abortion. The authors make a case against abortion: instead of emphasizing the human rights of the unborn, they argue that legal abortion has negative effects on the well-being of women themselves - socially, medically, psychologically and culturally.
