- Description
- This book examines the political influence of the leading Tory hostesses, the Marchionesses of Londonderry. From 1800-1959, these women were patrons and confidantes to key figures in the Anglo-Irish political establishment and, by the late 19th century, they were also exploiting more public avenues of political work: canvassing, addressing meetings and leading the new associations established in an attempt to educate a mass electorate. Their political influence changed with increasing democracy and the associated process of aristocratic decline. Central to the book is a depiction of the lives of three of the Marchionesses.

- Description
- This study examines the central role played by women as mediums, healers, and believers during the golden age of spiritualism in the late Victorian era. Using previously unexamined sources, the author invokes the Victorian world of darkened séance rooms, theatrical apparitions, and episodes of happiness lost and regained. She charts the struggles between spiritualists and the medical and legal establishments over the issue of female mediumship, and provides insights into the gendered dynamics of Victorian society.

- Description
- Through an exploration of the structures and processes of organisations, the authors bring to life the ways in which gender is performed, maintained and reproduced in many of the corporations and institutions in which we work. A range of research on gender, race and other forms of social difference is drawn upon to reveal how divisions and inequalities remain a significant aspect of work and organisations in spite of the fact that high profile is given to women who 'make it' to the top. At the same time, evidence is also presented to show how these persistent structural differences are variously contested and challenged by both women and men.

- Description
- Women have been structurally part of the masonic enterprise from at least the middle of the 18th century. This book is about the ways in which they themselves obtained and exercised power to influence the systems they were involved in, in order to adapt them to be more appropriate to their needs. The volume intends to concentrate on two aspects: Women’s agency (i.e. the power women gained and exercised in this context) and rituals (i.e. the role of men and women in changing and shaping the rituals women work with). These two aspects are closely related, since it requires some agency to realise changes in existing rituals.

- This paper demonstrates that power is a very complex phenomenon. It does not operate only in the unilinear, hierarchical ways posited by Liazos. Power is a contradictory force which resides both in socially designated powerful and powerless groups.
