- Description
- During the reign of Louis XIV, Gabrielle Suchon (1623–1703) spoke for women's freedom, self-determination, access to knowledge and authority in the public sphere, arguing that women and men are fundamentally similar and thus should be equal. This volume collects her writings from two works: 'Treatise on Ethics and Politics' (1693) and 'On the Celibate Life Freely Chosen: or, Life without Commitments' (1700). It’s the first English translation of her texts to be published and includes an introduction to her thought and life history.
