- Description
- 'Words of fire' is both a biography of Elisabeth Gurly Flynn (1890-1964) and the first collection of Flynn's writings on women. She was one of the greatest orators of her day, was a key organizer of labour strikes for the Industrial Workers of the World (familiar known as Wobblies), a leader of free speech battles, and a major figure in labor defense. She wrote a weekly newspaper column for twenty-six years, as well as political pamphlets, an autobiography, and a jail memoir. One of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union, she ran for Congress and was the first female chairman of the Communist Party of the United States of America.

- This book covers a period dating back to the eighteenth century. These essays highlight the artistry, complexity and diversity of a literary tradition that ranges from Lucy Terry to Toni Morrison. A wide range of topics are addressed, from the Harlem Renaissance to the Black Arts Movement, and from the performing arts to popular fiction. Together, the essays provide a guide to a tradition of women writers in conversation with each other as they critique American society and influence American letters.

- Description
- Despite Emily Dickinson’s world renown, the story of the two women most responsible for her posthumous publication, Mabel Loomis Todd and her daughter Millicent Todd Bingham, has remained in the shadows of the archives. A portrait of women who refused to be confined by the social mores of their era, this book explores Mabel and Millicent’s complex bond, as well as the powerful literary legacy they shared. Mabel’s tangled relationships with the Dickinsons, including a thirteen-year extramarital relationship with Emily’s brother, Austin, roiled the small town of Amherst, Massachusetts. After Emily’s death, Mabel’s connection to the family led her to the enormous trove of poems Emily left behind.

- Description
- In these essays Sandra M. Gilbert explores how our literary mothers have influenced us in our writing and in life. She considers the effects of these literary mothers by examining her own history and the work of such luminaries as Charlotte Brontë, Emily Dickinson, and Sylvia Plath. In the course of the book, she charts her own development as a feminist, demonstrates ways of understanding the dynamics of gender and genre, and traces the redefinitions of maternity reflected in texts by authors such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and George Eliot.Throughout, Gilbert asks major questions about feminism in the twentieth century: Why and how did its ideas become so necessary to women in the sixties and seventies? What have those feminist concepts come to mean in the new century? And above all, how have our intellectual mothers shaped our thoughts today?

- Description
- This book is about Canadian women writers who were active in the 20th century – Ethel Wilson, Gabrielle Roy, Gwen Pharis Ringwood, Dorothy Livesay, and P.K. Page – as well as such forgotten writers as Grace Irwin, Patricia Blondal, and Edna Jaques. And of contemporary voices and influences of novelists Tracey Lindberg and Heather O’Neill, poets Marilyn Dumont and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, playwrights Hannah Moscovitch and Anna Chatterton, and filmmakers Sarah Polley and Mina Shum. Writing for children as well as memoirs, autobiographies, comic books, and cookbooks illustrate the wide and impressive range of women’s talents.. .Spanning the period from the Massey Commission to the present and reflecting on the media of print, film, and song, this study attends to the women writers across genres. It explores how their work interprets our national story. The questioning, disruptive feminist practice of their fiction, filmmaking, poetry, song-writing, drama, and non-fiction reveals the tensions of colonial society at the same time as it transforms cultural life in Canada. In the back of the book you can find a timeline of world history to put in context.
