- Description
- Popular and academic representations of the free mulatta concubine depict women of mixed black African and white racial descent as defined by their sexual attachment to white men, and thus they offer evidence of the means to and dimensions of their freedom within Atlantic slave societies. In this book the author contends that the uniformity of these representations conceals the figure’s centrality to the practices and production of diaspora. She argues that the concubine figure’s manifestation as both historical subject and African diasporic goddess indicates her centrality to understanding how free and enslaved black subjects performed gender, theorized race and freedom, and produced their own diasporic identities. The book traces the free mulatta concubine across the physical and imaginative landscapes of three Atlantic sites: Gorée Island, New Orleans, and Saint Domingue (Haiti).

- Migration makes a profound impression on identity, its expressions and performance. Migrant communities often cast women as bearers of cultural reproduction. This is especially the case when women choose to become representatives of their community through cultural dance performances. Such performances are also a means to express the migrant life of movement and a way to maintain their sense of well-being. This book is a vision of expressions of gender and identity at the heart of the Asian women’s experience.

- The terms “man,” “woman,” and “other” are socially constructed. Their meanings are maintained by the current political order. In this book Lewis argues powerfully that the emphasis on desire is actually symptomatic of neoliberal habits of thought, and consequently, is responsible for a continued focus on the limited politics of identity. Instead, Lewis shows, we should look to the arena of body production, categorization, and exclusion: only through such a reorientation can we create a politics of liberation that is truly inclusive and grounded in lived experience.

- Despite the positive changes in Morocco and the growing emancipation of women in all domains, there are still hurdles that hinder their emancipation and participation in public life, such as illiteracy, unemployment, poverty, lack of education and professional training, insufficient resources, difficult access to loans, and weak representation in decision and policy-making. Women’s organizations today play a major role in sensitizing women, families, and social actors as to the importance of integrating women in economic, social, and cultural development. Further steps in favor of protecting women s rights are badly needed to ensure their strong contribution to sustainable development.

- Description
- In this publication, the author brings feminist and political theory together with findings in the life sciences to recuperate the category of the human for politics. Challenging the idea of human exceptionalism as well as other theories of subjectivity that rest on a distinction between biology and culture, she proposes that humans are biocultural creatures who quite literally are cultured within the material, social, and symbolic worlds they inhabit. Through discussions about carbon, the functions of cell membranes, the activity of genes and proteins, the work of oxygen, and the passage of time, the author recasts questions about the nature of matter, identity, and embodiment.

- Description
Bachelorscriptie

- Description

- Between 1945 and the 21th century millions of women, including mothers and migrants, joined the labour force. This book is an autobiography of the post-war period as Britain became a multi-cultural society and waged work the norm for most women. McDowell illustrates the shift in migration patterns as post-imperial migrants to the UK replaced the immediate post-war pattern of migrants from war-torn Europe and who were then themselves joined by migrants from an increasingly diverse range of countries as the 20th century drew to a close.

The volume offers critical re-assessments of dominant discourses of the diaspora and formations of the subject identities within it. By emphasizing the relevance of intra-diasporic conversations in film, literature and oral tradition, the volume engages core concerns in black diasporic communities : memory (remembering and forgetting), space/location, time, human agency, and shifting exigencies.

- This book is about a same-sex wedding ceremony in sixteenth-century Rome. The case involved a group of mostly Spanish and Portuguese men, arrested and executed in Rome in 1578, said to have performed same-sex wedding ceremonies in one of the city's major churches. We know about the incident from a number of sources, including the travel journal of the French essayist Michel de Montaigne. Ferguson brings the story to life in detail. He reveals not only the names of the men but also where they lived, how they were employed, and who their friends were. In particular, he unearths a surprising amount of detail about the men’s sex lives, and how others responded to this information, which allows him to explore attitudes toward marriage, sex, and gender at the time.
