- Description
- Migration makes a profound impression on identity, its expressions and performance. Migrant communities often cast women as bearers of cultural reproduction. This is especially the case when women choose to become representatives of their community through cultural dance performances. Such performances are also a means to express the migrant life of movement and a way to maintain their sense of well-being. This book is a vision of expressions of gender and identity at the heart of the Asian women’s experience.

- Description
- The twelve essays in this publication present a continuum of cases where the state enables violence against women - from state-sponsored torture to lax prosecution of sexual assault. Some contributors uncover buried histories of state violence against women throughout the twentieth century, in locations as diverse as Ireland, Indonesia, and Guatemala. Others spotlight ongoing struggles to define the state’s role in preventing gendered violence, from domestic abuse policies in the Russian Federation to anti-trafficking laws in the United States.

- Description
- Wayang kulit, or shadow puppetry, connects a mythic past to the present through public ritual performance and is one of most important performance traditions in Bali. The dalang, or puppeteer, is revered in Balinese society as a teacher and spiritual leader. Recently, women have begun to study and perform in this traditionally male role, an innovation that has triggered resistance and controversy. .In this book, the author draws on her own experience training as a dalang as well as interviews with early women dalang and leading artists to upend the usual assessments of such gender role shifts. She argues that rather than assuming that women performers are necessarily mounting a challenge to tradition, “tradition” in Bali must be understood as a system of power that is inextricably linked to gender hierarchy. She examines the very idea of “tradition” and how it forms both an ideological and social foundation in Balinese culture.

- Description
- This book examines life trajectories among three categories of women living beyond the bounds of heteronormativity in Jakarta and Delhi: women who have lost their husbands, either through divorce or death, sex workers, and young, urban lesbians. The public arena of sexual politics, in which the media play an important role, is explored in both cities. By charting the lives of women who live beyond the boundaries of the heteronormative, commonalities are revealed, boundaries and regulatory mechanisms in the context of symbolic violence are delineated, and the issue of the struggle for sexual rights for marginalized groups, and their open rebellion, brought to the fore. At the heart of the book lies elaboration of the ways Asian families are constructed: their social, economic, sexual, and religious agency, and how these engage with state-led values.

- Description

- This publication offers a comprehensive ethnography of Bugis marriage through an exploration of gender identity and sexuality in Indonesia. The author considers the fundamental concept of siriq (honour: shame) in relation to gender socialization, courtship, sex within marriage, the regulation of sexuality between genders, the importance of kinship and status in marriage, and the dynamics of marriage, divorce, and reconciliation. This analysis considers the practical combination of Islamic tenets with local adat (custom: customary law) and the effect of contemporary Indonesia’s national ideology on cultural practices specific to Bugis society.
