- Description
- In Ethnic Pride, American Patriotism the author presents a history of inter-war America from the perspective of new Slovak and Eastern European immigrant communities. .Like the groups that preceded them, Slovak immigrants came to define being American as adhering to its political principles: they saw no contradiction between being patriotic Americans and maintaining pride in their ancestry. To counter the negative effects of the 1924 immigration law, Slovaks mobilized a variety of political and cultural activities to insure group survival and promote ethnic pride. In numerous localities 'Slovak days' brought first and second generation immigrants together to celebrate their dual identity. .Alexander's study adds complexity and nuance to entrenched notions of conflicts between tradition-bound immigrants and their American-born children. Showing that ethnicity mattered to both generations, Alexander challenges generalizations derived from 'whiteness' studies

- Description
- Should immigrants have to pass a literacy test in order to enter the United States? Progressive-Era Americans debated this question for more than twenty years, and by the time the literacy test became law in 1917, the debate had transformed the way Americans understood immigration, and created the logic that shaped immigration restriction policies throughout the twentieth century. Jeanne Petit argues that the literacy test debate was about much more than reading ability or the virtues of education. It also tapped into broader concerns about the relationship between gender, sexuality, race, and American national identity. The congressmen, reformers, journalists, and pundits who supported the literacy test hoped to stem the tide of southern and eastern European immigration.

- Description
- This volume reflects the potential of a new perspective that allows for a more adequate analysis of transnational activities, by looking at the lives and work of women’s activists in informal border-crossings, ephemeral NGOs, the lower management of established international organizations, and other global networks. By pointing out cultural hierarchies, the vicissitudes of translation and re-interpretation, and the ambiguity of intercultural exchange, this volume demonstrates the potential of transnational history. A forgotten instance of women’s international organizing. - Description
- This special section is based on a series of reading seminars, workshops and lectures on the concept of intersectionality held at the VUB Centre of Expertise on Gender, Diversity, and Intersectionality (RHEA) in 2013 and 2014. The focus of these events was on the question of whether and in what way, the concept of intersectionality should inform both policy-oriented research and equality laws and policies. Myra Marx Ferree claims that the travel of intersectionality from the highly racialized context of the United States to the European context implies that feminist scholars should be much more attentive to their proper white (and other) privileges. Power, she says, is a relationship, and intersectionality can therefore only be understood in a dynamic fashion: relations and power struggles - with varying and simultaneous winners and losers - need to put in place stable categories and antipodal positions. Helma Lutz conceives of intersectionality as a heuristic device or a method that allows for uncobring both visible and invisible strands of inequality and processes that underpin privilege and disadvantage. Mieke Verloo addresses the issue of whether positive action is still desirable. By highlighting the impact of positive actions on multiple intersectional categories Verloo shows that specific effects is needed to establish equality. Policy-makers need to be very careful in defining intersectional categories, since they are always contextualized. Dagmar Schiek discusses the field of the feminist and intersectional battle: the EU non-discrimination law. These are some of the essays and articles that shows a wide variety of methods and analyse a diverse set of country cases and intersecting identiy markers and show that intersectionality is a fruitful research area feeding into policy and law-making.

- Ford asks himself: what is black culture? This book questions the common presumption of political multiculturalism that social categories such as race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are defined by distinctive cultural practices. Richard Ford argues against law reform proposals that would attempt to apply civil rights protections to 'cultural difference.' The book argues that far from remedying discrimination and status hierarchy, 'cultural rights' share the ideological presuppositions, and participate in the discursive and institutional practices, of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Ford offers specific examples in support of this thesis, in diverse contexts such as employment discrimination, affirmative action, and transracial adoption.

- In 2004, the French government instituted a ban on the wearing of 'conspicuous signs' of religious affiliation in public schools. Though the ban applies to everyone, it is aimed at Muslim girls wearing headscarves. Proponents of the law insist it upholds France's values of secular liberalism and regard the headscarf as symbolic of Islam's resistance to modernity. 'The Politics of the Veil' is an explosive refutation of this view, one that bears important implications for us all. Joan Wallach Scott argues that the law is symptomatic of France's failure to integrate its former colonial subjects as full citizens. She examines the long history of racism behind the law as well as the ideological barriers thrown up against Muslim assimilation. She emphasizes the conflicting approaches to sexuality that lie at the heart of the debate. Scott maintains that the law, far from reconciling religious and ethnic differences, only exacerbates them.

- Description
- This book integrates the role of gender in girls' and women's development across the life span, looking specifically at internal and external vulnerabilities and risks, and the protective or supportive factors that facilitate effective coping, positive growth, strength and resilience. The interaction between physical, psychological, and cultural factors is integrated within each period of development. The book emphasizes how gender socialization of female development and behavior impacts self-evaluation and identity processes within various cultural groups. The authors also discusses the social roles that girls and women reflectively adopt and describe how externally induced risks such as poverty, interpersonal abuse, and violence influence a healthy development.

- This publication explores the multiple manifestations and implications of gendered biases in Political Science by ‘connecting the dots’ between the sexual harassment described in the recent report on 2017 American Political Science Association’s Survey on Sexual Harassment at Annual Meetings and other problematic issues. The essays in book focus in particular on bullying, entitled and toxic forms of masculinity; systematic discounting of and dismissiveness and derision toward work on gender and sexuality; biases and inequities associated with hiring, teaching evaluations, service loads, and tenure and promotion; and related and often intersecting forms of harassment but not only those related to race and sexuality.

- Fujiwara studied the consequences on Asian immigrant women and their families of the welfare reform act and the acts on illegal immigration and immigrant responsibility of the Clinton administration in 1996. She approached the study from a feminist epistemological point of view. The book illustrates how degrading constructions of race, gender, and class demonize poor Southeast Asian refugee women and their families as 'inassimilable' foreigners and therefore undeserving of citizenship and public assistance.

- Description
- The experience of women in the nineteenth century has generated a lot of research in recent decades. This book presents recent scholarship available in a concise resource, providing thus an authoritative source of information and interpretation. The authors emphasize areas in which scholars have identified important changes (such as suffrage and reform), topics in which researchers are now making great strides (such as racial, ethnic, religious, and regional diversity), and innovative and relatively recent explorations (for example, work on female sexuality). Accessible overview articles and alphabetical encyclopedia-like entries are combined in a comprehensive volume. .Part 1 contains a historiographical essay followed by a ten-chapter narrative overview. These chapters include discussions of families and households, labor and the workforce, religion and morality, feminism and equal rights, reform and voluntarism, and more. Part 2 is an A-to-Z listing of concise entries on key terms, notable figures, political movements, social and religious organizations, and legislation.

- Description
- Forty years after the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision legalizing abortion, Roe v. Wade continues to make headlines. This book presents an account of cultural and political responses to the landmark 1973 ruling in the decade that followed. The grassroots activists who shaped the discussion after Roe were far more fluid and diverse than the partisans dominating the debate today. In the early years after the decision, advocates on either side of the abortion battle sought common ground on issues from pregnancy discrimination to fetal research. Abortion rights proponents were insensitive to larger questions of racial and class injustice, and expose as caricature the idea that abortion opponents were inherently antifeminist. But over time, “pro-abortion” and “anti-abortion” positions hardened into “pro-choice” and “pro-life” categories in response to political pressures and compromises.

- Description
- In this publication, the author exposes racialized rhetorics of violence in politics and charts the development of gender as a category in U.S. asylum law. Starting with the late 1980s, when gender-based requests first emerged in case law, she analyzes gender and sexuality-related cases against the backdrop of national and transnational politics. She reviews the claims, evidence, testimony, and message strategies that unfolded in these legal arguments and decisions, and illuminates how legal decisions turned gender into a political construct vulnerable to U.S. national and global interests.

- This book offers a way of conceptualising how women's drinking habits changed in response to wars, ideology, advertising, moral panics, sexism, legislative initiatives, employment, age, ethnicity, technology, new drinking venues, and marketing strategies. Brewers' efforts to entice women into drinking beer regularly spanned the decades since 1945, but consistently failed. Close attention is also paid to the image of drinking, projected in advertising, the mass media and films.

- Description
- This book analyses the impact that prolonged socio-political conflict in India has had on political and social spaces for women. Based on empirical material collected from in-depth interviews with individuals on both sides of the conflict, the book locates the analysis in both a legal and political context. It examines the causes, dynamics and impact of the ethno-political conflicts in Assam, as well as the efficacy and outcomes of ‘capacity building’ programmes aimed at rehabilitating the surrendered militants as well as assisting affected women. The book goes on to look at the role played by civil society, especially the Mahila Shanti Sena (Women Peace Corp), towards conflict transformation. It highlights the preventive, mitigative and adaptive measures taken by the women and their role as agents of peace in the volatile zones of North East India.
