- Description
- The author looks at the lives of Turkish-Dutch Muslim students who actively practice their religion., manifest by the visible marker of the headscarf, with a focus on gender. How do Turkish-Dutch students dress, behave, act and engage with others in a way as to socially and culturally establish themselves as pious Muslim women? Since the research context was the Netherlands, how they did gender was also connected with a migrant status and with ethnicity.

- Description
- This research shows that many women try to integrate, some explicitly because of and not despite Islam. Their definitions, needs, and strategies of integration and their integration experiences vary though, depending on the combination of their generational status, educational level, ethnicity/nationality, and age. This variation is not reflected by policies and how society treats them, which hampers their integration. Furthermore, many women do feel at home in the Netherlands. Nonetheless, the more they integrate, the greater their exposure to assimilative pressures. This can diminish their sense of home, thereby thwarting their integration process.

- Description
- This bookdevelops essential insights concerning the notion of transnational citizenship by means of the life stories of highly educated Turkish migrant women in Germany and Great Britain, interweaving and developing theories of citizenship, identity and hybridity with the lived experiences of an immigrant group that has so far received insufficient attention. By focusing on the British and German contexts, it introduces a European and comparative perspective, whilst exploring the ways in which concepts and policies of citizenship allow for a differentiated examination of ethnicity, gender, multiculturalism and citizenship in Europe. With its empirical material in its exploration of the ways in which migrant women, though often marginalized from the nation as legal or cultural outsiders, create new meanings of belonging, this book suggests how citizenship debates can be reframed to be inclusive of migrant women as actors.

- Description
- Young Turkish women and South Asian-Surinamese women are much more likely to attempt suicide than young Dutch women. On the other hand, their Moroccan counterparts are less likely to do so. In particular, the extent to which young women are restricted in important life choices plays a crucial role. Figures from the Rotterdam Public Health Service (GGD) showed that 19.2 % of young Surinamese Hindu women had attempted suicide. 14.6 % of young Turkish women, and 8.8 % of young Dutch women. Yet only 6.2 % of young Moroccan women reported ever making a suicide attempt. According to Van Bergen, a migratory background or an ethnic minority status therefore fails to fully explain the increased risk of suicidal behaviour among young female migrants. Van Bergen interviewed fifty women who had previously attempted suicide: both women with a migratory background and native Dutch women.
