- Description
- Greed and lust are generally considered good only for men, and then only outside the realm of family life. The history of Western economic ideas shows that men have given themselves more cultural permission than women for the pursuit of both economic and sexual self-interest. Feminists have long contested the boundaries of this permission, demanding more than mere freedom to act more like men. Women have gradually gained the power to revise our conceptual and moral maps and to insist on a better-and less gendered-balance between self interest and care for others. This book brings women's work, their sexuality, and their ideas into the center of the dialectic between economic history and the history of economic ideas. It describes a spiralling process of economic and cultural change in Great Britain, France, and the United States since the 18th century that shaped the evolution of patriarchal capitalism and the larger relationship between production and reproduction. This feminist reinterpretation of our past holds profound implications for today's efforts to develop a more humane and sustainable form of capitalism.

- Unlike other philosophers whose work can be applied to questions of sex and gender, Deleuze's philosophy was motivated by the problem of desire and difference. Over the last three decades, feminist theory, gender theory and queer theory have been revolutionised and rejuvenated by Deleuze's provocation to consider sexual difference beyond the paradigm of the Oedipal family and Western humanism. In this volume, a series of theorists extend Deleuze's already radical philosophy into ideas of the post-human, truth, reading, sexual difference and gender politics.

- Description
- The author reveals the world of elite prostitution in eighteenth-century Paris by focusing on the professional mistresses who dominated it. In this demimonde, these dames exchanged sex, company, and sometimes even love for being “kept.” Most of these women entered the profession unwillingly. A small but significant percentage of kept women, however, came from a theater subculture that actively supported elite prostitution. Kushner shows that in its moral codes and even its sexual practices, the demimonde was an integral part of contemporary Parisian culture.

- Description
- This volume reflects the potential of a new perspective that allows for a more adequate analysis of transnational activities, by looking at the lives and work of women’s activists in informal border-crossings, ephemeral NGOs, the lower management of established international organizations, and other global networks. By pointing out cultural hierarchies, the vicissitudes of translation and re-interpretation, and the ambiguity of intercultural exchange, this volume demonstrates the potential of transnational history. Chapter 1. Understanding international feminisms as ‘transnational’ – an anachronism? May Wright Sewall and the creation of the International Council of Women, 1889 to 1904 / Karen Offen: Chapter 2. A forgotten instance of women’s international organizing. - This book shows how definitions of sexuality and gender roles operated and how such definitions articulated concerns inside a given culture. There are new approaches to understanding famous figures, such as Elizabeth I, James VI and I and his wife Anna of Denmark: Francis I: St. Teresa of Avila. Other chapters investigate topics such as militarism and court culture, and wider groups, such as urban citizens and noble families. - In 2004, the French government instituted a ban on the wearing of 'conspicuous signs' of religious affiliation in public schools. Though the ban applies to everyone, it is aimed at Muslim girls wearing headscarves. Proponents of the law insist it upholds France's values of secular liberalism and regard the headscarf as symbolic of Islam's resistance to modernity. 'The Politics of the Veil' is an explosive refutation of this view, one that bears important implications for us all. Joan Wallach Scott argues that the law is symptomatic of France's failure to integrate its former colonial subjects as full citizens. She examines the long history of racism behind the law as well as the ideological barriers thrown up against Muslim assimilation. She emphasizes the conflicting approaches to sexuality that lie at the heart of the debate. Scott maintains that the law, far from reconciling religious and ethnic differences, only exacerbates them.

- Description
- In her study of eighteenth-century literature and medical treatises, Mary McAlpin takes up the widespread belief among cultural philosophers of the French Enlightenment that society was gravely endangered by the effects of hyper-civilization. McAlpin's study explores a strong thread in this rhetoric of decline: the belief that premature puberty in young urban girls, supposedly brought on by their exposure to lascivious images, titillating novels, and lewd conversations, was the source of an increasing moral and physical degeneration. In how-to hygiene books intended for parents, the medical community declared that the only cure for this obviously involuntary departure from the 'natural' path of sexual development was the increased surveillance of young girls. As these treatises by vitalist and vitalist-inspired physiologists became increasingly common in the 1760s, McAlpin shows, so, too, did the presence of young, vulnerable, and virginal heroines in the era's novels. Analyzing novels by, among others, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Denis Diderot, and Choderlos de Laclos, she offers physiologically based readings of many of the period's most famous heroines within the context of an eighteenth-century discourse on women and heterosexual desire that broke with earlier periods in recasting female and male desire as qualitatively distinct. Her study persuasively argues that the Western view of women's sexuality as a mysterious, nebulous force - Freud's 'dark continent' - has its secular origins in the mid-eighteenth century.

- The author researched domestic violence among the working class in France and uncoverd intimate details of daily life and the complex workings of court proceedings in fin-de-siècle Paris. She looked at hundreds of court records to understand why so many perpetrators of violent crime were acquitted. She finds that court verdicts depended on community standards for violence between couples. Her search uncovers testimony from witnesses, defendants, and victims documenting the conflicts and connections among men and women who struggled to balance love, desire, and economic need in their relationships. The analysis of these cases also reconstructs the social, cultural, and legal conditions in which they took place. The ethnographic approach offers insight into the daily lives of nineteenth-century Parisians, revealing how they chose their partners, what they fought about, and what drove them to violence. In their battles over money and sex, couples were in effect testing and enforcing gender roles.

The resulting chaos—ranging from flagrant public sex with prostitutes to outright rape and rampant venereal disease—horrified the war-weary and demoralized French population. The sexual predation, and the blithe response of the American military leadership, also caused serious friction between the two nations just as they were attempting to settle questions of long-term control over the liberated territories and the restoration of French sovereignty.

- Description
- Surrealist Masculinities offers an exploration of how surrealist visual production was shaped by constructions of gender and sexuality, particularly masculinity, in the 1920s and early 1930s. Amy Lyford builds on feminist critical approaches to surrealism, which have viewed the female body in surrealism as symptomatic of male misogyny: yet she also departs from such work by arguing that representations of an anxious, ambivalent, or perverse masculinity were integral to the movement's critique of France's 'return to order' in the years following World War I. This book analyzes surrealist work in relation to the history of surrealism and investigates how surrealist artists and writers appropriated contemporary medical science, advertising, and sexology in their quest to undermine the status quo.

- Throughout the early modern period in France, surgeon men-midwives were predominantly associated with sexual impropriety and physical danger: yet over time they managed to change their image, and by the eighteenth century were summoned to attend even the uncomplicated deliveries of wealthy, urban clients. In this study, Lianne McTavish explores how surgeons strove to transform the perception of their midwifery practices, claiming to be experts who embodied obstetrical authority instead of intruders in a traditionally feminine domain. .McTavish argues that early modern French obstetrical treatises were sites of display participating in both the production and contestation of authoritative knowledge of childbirth. Though primarily written by surgeon men-midwives, the texts were also produced by female midwives and male physicians. She discovers that male practitioners did not always disdain maternal values. The men regularly identified themselves with qualities traditionally respected in female midwives, including a bodily experience of childbirth. Her findings suggest that men's entry into the lying-in chamber was a complex negotiation involving their adaptation to the demands of women.

- Does gender make a difference to the way the judiciary works and should work? Or, is gender blindness a built-in prerequisite of judicial objectivity? If gender does make a difference, how might this be defined? These are the key questions posed in this collection of essays. The book's pressing topicality is underlined by the fact that male opposition to women's admission to, and progress within, the judicial profession has been largely based on the argument that, because of their gender, women are naturally programmed to show empathy, partiality, and gendered prejudice - in short, essential qualities running directly counter to the need for judicial bjectivity. There remains a more or less pronounced glass ceiling to women's judicial careers.

After the victories of the past decades, during women had made some real advances in social and political life, a new sensibility began to emarge in the 1990s which led to reversel in the hierchy of values. The cult of victimhood has become widespread and had affected feminism.Women are viewed as defenceless and oppressed, social violence and sexual violence are treated as the same. Feminism of the last years has reactiveted old stereotypes and that is a dead end.

- When the French invaded Italy in 1494, they were shocked by the frank sexuality expressed in Italian cities. By 1600, the French were widely considered to be the most highly sexualized nation in Christendom. What caused this transformation? This book examines how, as Renaissance textual practices and new forms of knowledge rippled outward from Italy, the sexual landscape and French notions of masculinity, sexual agency, and procreation were fundamentally changed. Exploring the use of astrology, the infusion of Neoplatonism, the critique of Petrarchan love poetry, and the monarchy's sexual reputation, the book reveals that the French encountered conflicting ideas from abroad and from antiquity about the meanings and implications of sexual behavior.

- Description
- This interdisciplinary book responds to the explosion of gay and lesbian creativity on modern-day France. Rather than attempting to formalize a specifically 'gay' or 'lesbian' style or identity, the authors seek to open up new 'homotextualities,' understood here as ongoing constructions and deconstructions of both homosexuality and its environments. They investigate the work of (among others) Violette Leduc, Renaud Camus, and Guy Hocquenghem: the cinema of Josiane Balasko and Cyril Collard: the theoretical writings of Leo Bersani, Luce Irigaray, and Monique Wittig. Employing a range of methods, authors re-evaluate and contest both the literary and theoretical canon and establish new convergences between French and Gay Studies, in particular, queer theory.

- Description
- This book provides a view of changing lives and ideas about love, courtship, marriage, giving birth, parenting, childhood, and adolescence in France from the Vichy regime to the sexual revolution of 1960s. The research was based on guide books on marriage, childbirth and parenting, advice columns and popular magazines directed at readers from a variety of backgrounds. The author puts these sources into context, by exploring juvenile court family case studies. She links economic and social changes to the evolution of thinking about gender, the self, and the family.

- Description
- Before the term 'transgender' existed, there were those who experienced their gender in complex ways. Mesch examines the lives and writings of Jane Dieulafoy (1850–1916), Rachilde (1860–1953), and Marc de Montifaud (1845–1912), three French writers whose gender expression did not conform to nineteenth-century notions of femininity. Their personal stories provide historical context to understand the nature of gender identity and the ways in which it might be expressed.. .Dieulafoy fought alongside her husband in the Franco-Prussian War and traveled with him to the Middle East: later she wrote novels about girls becoming boys and enjoyed being photographed in her signature men's suits. Rachilde became famous in the 1880s for her controversial gender-bending novel Monsieur Vénus, published around the same time that she started using a calling card that read 'Rachilde, Man of Letters.' Montifaud began her career as an art critic before turning to erotic writings, for which she was repeatedly charged with 'offense to public decency': she wore tailored men's suits and a short haircut for much of her life and went by masculine pronouns among certain friends.

- Description
- During more than a century of colonial rule over Algeria, the French state shaped and reshaped the meaning and practice of Muslim law by regulating it and circumscribing it to the domain of family law, while applying the French Civil Code to appropriate the property of Algerians. In this publication, the author traces how colonial authorities constructed Muslim legal difference and used it to deny Algerian Muslims full citizenship. This book also highlights the ways in which Algerians interacted with and responded to colonial law. The study is based on the colonial archive of French Algeria.

- Description
- 1968 is a watershed year in the history of revolutionary movements, one whose events reshape everything that follows. Drawing on archival research, close readings of texts and images, and political analysis to reframe these events in a comparative global context, this collection proposes new visions in how we think about 1968 and what has come since. It decenters the typical western tales told about 1968 by bringing in the vantage points of Havana, Mexico City, Prague, and Dakar, while offering new accounts of developments in Paris and San Francisco as well. The beaten, burning, and yearning bodies evoked here change how we think about the interconnections between emotions and politics
