- The essays in this book reveal the diverse ways black women experience and represent sexuality. The contributors highlight the range of tactics that black women use to express their sexual desires and identities. .The authors take not only an interdisciplinary approach, but also an intergenerational one, in conversation with the foremothers of black feminist studies. In addition, the book explores a diverse archive of representations, covering everything from blues to hip-hop, from Crash to Precious, from Sister Souljah to Edwidge Danticat. Revealing that black female sexuality is anything but a black-and-white issue, this collection demonstrates how to appreciate a whole spectrum of subjectivities, experiences, and desires.

- This book considers six authors who use experimental methods and negative modes of critique in their fiction and feminism. The authors covered are Valerie Solanas, Kathy Acker, Theresa Cha, Chantel Chawaf, Jeanette Winterson, and Lynda Barry. These writers share a commitment to combining extreme content with formally radical techniques in order to enact varieties of gender, sex, race, class and nation-based experience that, they suggest, may only be “represented” accurately through the experimental unmaking of dominant structures of rationality.

- Davis takes readers behind the scenes of two hundred years’ worth of conflicts over the existence, separation, and equity of gendered public restrooms, documenting at each step how bathrooms have been entangled with bigger cultural matters: the importance of the public good, the reach of institutional inclusion, the nature of gender difference, and the myriad privileges of social status. Chronicling the debut of nineteenth-century “comfort stations,” twentieth-century mandates requiring equal-but-separate men’s and women’s rooms, and twenty-first-century uproar over laws like North Carolina’s “bathroom bill,” Davis reveals how public restrooms are far from marginal or unimportant social spaces.

Dean provides a historical understanding of heterosexuality and how it was first established, then moves on to examine the changing nature of masculinity and femininity and, most importantly, the emergence of a new kind of heterosexuality—notably, for men, the metrosexual, and for women, the emergence of a more fluid sexuality.

- In recent years, there has been substantial progress on LGBTQ civil rights in the United States. We are now in a time of incredible political uncertainty for queer people. This book provides an introduction to mainstream LGBTQ movements in the US, illustrating the many forms that LGBTQ activism has taken since the mid-twentieth century. The book covers a range of topics, including the Stonewall uprising and gay liberation, AIDS politics, queer activism, marriage equality fights and bisexual and transgender justice. Stulberg explores how marginalized communities have used a wide range of political and cultural tools to create change. The five key themes that guide the book are assimilationism and liberationism as strategies for equality, the possibilities of legal change, the role of art and popular culture in social change, the interconnectedness of social movements and the role of privilege in movement organizing.

- This book deals not only with 'typical' colonial empires like the British Empire, but also with those less well-studied, such as the German, Russian, Italian and U.S. empires. The focus is on various imperial formations, from colonies in Africa or Asia to settler colonial settings like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The book deals with key themes such as intimacy, sexuality and female education, as well as exploring aspects like the marriage regimes some empires developed or the so-called 'servant debates'. It also presents several ways in which imperial formations were structured by gender and categories like race, class, caste, sexuality, religion and citizenship.

- The #MeToo movement went viral with a tweet from Alyssa Milano after the avalanche of sexual harassment and assault allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. The hashtag, however, got its start from African-American, grassroots activist Tarana Burke a decade earlier. Taking this as her starting place, Gieseler focuses on the communities that are often ignored once a movement goes mainstream. With chapters on black female activism, the LGBTQ+ community and disability, toxic masculinity, and international responses, the book issues a call for all movements to become more inclusive as they seek empowerment and resistance against oppressive and abusive forces.

- The author uses masochism as a lens to examine how power structures race, gender, and embodiment in different contexts. Musser employs masochism as a tool for probing relationships between power and subjectivity. Engaging with a range of debates about lesbian S&M, racialization, femininity, and disability, as well as key texts such as Sacher-Masoch’s Venus in Furs, Pauline Réage’s The Story of O, and Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality, Musser renders legible the complex ways that masochism has been taken up by queer, feminist, and critical race theories. Furthering queer theory’s investment in affect and materiality, she proposes “sensation” as an analytical tool for illustrating what it feels like to be embedded in structures of domination such as patriarchy, colonialism, and racism and what it means to embody femininity, blackness, and pain.

- While Latina girls have high teen birth rates and are at increasing risk for contracting sexually transmitted infections, their sexual lives are much more complex than the negative stereotypes of them as “helpless†or “risky†suggest. In this book the author examines how Latina girls negotiate their emerging sexual identities and attempt to create positive sexual experiences for themselves. Through a focus on their sexual agency, Garcia demonstrates that Latina girls experience with sexism, racism, homophobia and socioeconomic marginality. That informs how they engage and begin to rework their meanings of gender and sexuality.

- Description
- Kristan Poirot demonstrates that contemporary theories about sex, gender, identity, and difference compel a rethinking of the history of feminist movements and their rhetorical practices. .Poirot focuses on five case studies : the circulation of Sojourner Truth's 'Ain't I a Woman?' in early and contemporary feminist contexts: the visual rhetorics of the feminist self-help health movement: the public discourse of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and early nineteenth-century ideas about suffrage, sex, and race: the conflicts over lesbian sexuality in the 1960s and 1970s: and the discourse that surrounds twenty-first-century SlutWalks. In the process, Poirot rethinks the terms through which we understand U.S. feminist movements to explore the ways feminism has questioned sexed distinctions and practices over time.

- Gloria Wekker explores a central paradox of Dutch culture: the passionate denial of racial discrimination and colonial violence coexisting alongside aggressive racism and xenophobia. Accessing a cultural archive built over 400 years of Dutch colonial rule, Wekker fundamentally challenges Dutch racial exceptionalism by undermining the dominant narrative of the Netherlands as a 'gentle' and 'ethical' nation. Wekker analyzes the Dutch media's portrayal of black women and men, the failure to grasp race in the Dutch academy, contemporary conservative politics and the controversy surrounding the folkloric character Black Pete, showing how the denial of racism and the expression of innocence safeguards white privilege.

- This book provides an overview of the main themes surrounding the history of sexuality from 1500 to the present day. The history of sex and the body is an expanding field in which vibrant debate on, for instance, the history of homosexuality, is developing. This book examines the current scholarship and looks towards future directions across the field. The volume is divided into fourteen thematic chapters, which are split into two chronological sections 1500 – 1750 and 1750 to present day. Focusing on the history of sexuality and the body in the West but also interactions with a broader globe, these thematic chapters survey the major areas of debate and discussion. Covering themes such as science, identity, the gaze, courtship, reproduction, sexual violence and the importance of race, the volume offers a comprehensive view of the history of sex and the body. The book concludes with an afterword in which the reader is invited to consider some of the ‘tensions, problems and areas deserving further scrutiny’.

- This book engages scholarly essays, poems, and creative writings that examine the meanings of race, gender, and sexual orientation as interlocking systems of oppression. Each chapter in this volume critically interrogates the notion of identity as socially constructed, yet interconnected and shaped by cultural associations. The shaping of an individual’s identity, communication, and worldview can be read, shaped, and understood through life, art, popular culture, mass media, and cross-cultural interactions, among other things.

- This book brings to life women’s experiences during their doctoral study and the experiences of women who supervise doctoral students. It examines the emotional and embodied nature of writing, supervising, and inter-subjective learning. It makes visible ethics of care required in that liminal space in which supervisors and doctoral scholars work to shape and give confidence to the becoming academic. The book works through the politics of gender, sexuality, age, class, and ethnicity to understand meanings inherent in doctoral and supervisory relationships, reasons for entering academe, and how academic writing obtains form and content.

- This book investigates meanings associated with female head hair, problematising assumptions about its role and implications in the 21st Century. Authors reflect on the use of hair in popular culture, such as children’s television and pop album artwork, as well as in work by women artists. Studies examine the lived experiences of women from a range of backgrounds and histories, including curly-haired women in Israel, African American women and lesbians in France. Other essays interrogate the connotations of women’s head hair in relation to body image, religion and aging.

- Sweden has the reputation of being one of the most gender-equal countries in the world, and it is often held up as a model for other societies—but the reality is much more complicated, as this volume shows. This book provides an analysis of the myth of Swedish gender equality and demonstrates how that dominant idea has become a form of heteronormative, racially specific nationalism that ultimately excludes those who fall outside the social norm.

- For women-identified writers the fantastic offered double vision. Not only did the genre offer strategic cover for challenging the status quo, but also a mechanism for teasing out the gendered psyche’s links to creative, personal and erotic agency. These dynamic presentations of female and gender-queer subjectivity are linked in complex matrices to key moments in gender(ed) history. This volume contains essays covering a wide range of topics, including werewolves, mummies, fairies, demons, time travel, ghosts, haunted spaces and objects, race, gender, queerness, monstrosity, madness, incest, empire, medicine, and science.

- This book is about the neglect of gender and race in explanations of the Global Financial Crisis. It is also about the sexual scandals and gendered austerity policies that have relegated public debate, and the crisis itself. We need to look at the activities and the privileges of the advantaged - the 'TED women' of the crisis -- as much as the victimization of the disadvantaged - to fully grasp the interplay between gender and economy in this age of restoration .
