- Description
- This publication is based on the conviction that factualities of human life, such as birth, illness, sex and death benefit from being examined in the light of feminist philosophy and phenomenology of the body. Authors would bring together scholars engaged in feminist philosophy and phenomenology of the body, who investigate lived experiences, beliefs and norms in various medical practices. These could include parents’ experiences when their child is born with unclear sex, transsexual persons experiences of waiting for genital surgery, analyses of life with chronic disease, and research on the medical practice of having conjoined twins undergo surgery, as some examples. The anthology also discusses whether a combination of phenomenology of the body and feminist philosophy can be the basis for a medical or a care ethics.

- An anti-homosexuality law circulating in the Ugandan parliament generated between 2009 and 2014 a global discussion about queer rights. The book explores the afterlives of colonialism and the queer futures enabled by it in Uganda, India, and Britain. It describes the international relations that anticipated and followed the Anti Homosexuality Act, explores the dialectic produced by two opposed statements that mark queer postcolonial disagreements and reveals how queerness mutates in different configurations of power.

- Davis takes readers behind the scenes of two hundred years’ worth of conflicts over the existence, separation, and equity of gendered public restrooms, documenting at each step how bathrooms have been entangled with bigger cultural matters: the importance of the public good, the reach of institutional inclusion, the nature of gender difference, and the myriad privileges of social status. Chronicling the debut of nineteenth-century “comfort stations,” twentieth-century mandates requiring equal-but-separate men’s and women’s rooms, and twenty-first-century uproar over laws like North Carolina’s “bathroom bill,” Davis reveals how public restrooms are far from marginal or unimportant social spaces.

- Description
- This book confronts the historic devaluation of lesbian-feminist politics within Anglo-American discourse and ignites a transnational and transgenerational discussion regarding the relevance of lesbian feminisms in today’s world. The writers consider the wider place of lesbian feminisms within queer theory, post-colonial feminism and the movement for LGBT rights. They consider how lesbian feminisms can contribute to discussions on intersectionality, engage with trans activism and the need for trans-inclusion, to ultimately show how lesbian feminisms can offer a transformative approach to today’s sexual and gender politics.

- In recent years, there has been substantial progress on LGBTQ civil rights in the United States. We are now in a time of incredible political uncertainty for queer people. This book provides an introduction to mainstream LGBTQ movements in the US, illustrating the many forms that LGBTQ activism has taken since the mid-twentieth century. The book covers a range of topics, including the Stonewall uprising and gay liberation, AIDS politics, queer activism, marriage equality fights and bisexual and transgender justice. Stulberg explores how marginalized communities have used a wide range of political and cultural tools to create change. The five key themes that guide the book are assimilationism and liberationism as strategies for equality, the possibilities of legal change, the role of art and popular culture in social change, the interconnectedness of social movements and the role of privilege in movement organizing.

- 9/11 is not simple a date on the calendar but marks a distinct historical threshold, ushering in the war on terror and a supposed “clash of civilizations. Perhaps no date, since Virginia Woolf declared that “on or about December 1910 human character changed,” has marked such a singular point in the perception of time, identity and nature. Women’s writing has always been something of a counter-canon, offering modes of voice and point of view beyond that of the “man” of reason. This collection of essays explores the two problems of what it means to write as a woman and what it means to write in the twenty-first century.

- This book explores the history of homophobia in Russia, by examining nine 'case histories' that reveal the origins and development of homophobic attitudes in modern Russia. In the first part it examines some sites of homophobic violence in Russia after 1945. Secondly, it looks at the rise of a visible LGBT scene in late Soviet and later post-communist Russian society. The third part is about writing and remembering Russia's queer past. The author argues that the lack of adequate historical research and memory work will weaken the future of Russia's LGBT citizens.

Drawing from the New York Public Library's archives, this is a collection of first accounts, diaries, periodic literature, and articles from LGBTQ magazines and newspapers that documented both the years leading up to and the years following the riots. The anthology focuses on the events of 1969, the five years before, and the five years after.

- The #MeToo movement went viral with a tweet from Alyssa Milano after the avalanche of sexual harassment and assault allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. The hashtag, however, got its start from African-American, grassroots activist Tarana Burke a decade earlier. Taking this as her starting place, Gieseler focuses on the communities that are often ignored once a movement goes mainstream. With chapters on black female activism, the LGBTQ+ community and disability, toxic masculinity, and international responses, the book issues a call for all movements to become more inclusive as they seek empowerment and resistance against oppressive and abusive forces.

Though the options and freedoms for LGBTQ+ people living in the West are greater than ever before, the question is at what cost this acceptance has come and who is left behind, particularly where LGBTQ+ rights are not enough promoted and supported. The author searches for answers to these challenges as well as to the broader question of what it means to be queer in 2019 worldwide. To illustrate this she describes her emotions at the first same-sex marriage in Britain, her experiences at both the world's biggest drag queen festival in Los Angeles and Pride parades across Europe and her visit to a transgender model agency.

- Moultrie explores the impact of faith-based sexual ministries on black women's sexual agency to trace how these women navigate sexuality, religious authority and their spiritual walk with God. Providing churchwomen a space to discuss these issues, these popular ministries exist largely beyond the traditional church, with dialogues about sex taking place in chat rooms and through text messages and social media. Moultrie foregrounds a televangelist construction of the black Christian sexual identity these ministries promote while emphasizing how women reconcile these identities with their individual experiences. What does it mean for senior women to exercise sexual agency when their church standing could be questioned? What does celibacy mean for women who experience same-sex desire while believing that such desire goes against God's will?

- Kristan Poirot demonstrates that contemporary theories about sex, gender, identity, and difference compel a rethinking of the history of feminist movements and their rhetorical practices. .Poirot focuses on five case studies : the circulation of Sojourner Truth's 'Ain't I a Woman?' in early and contemporary feminist contexts: the visual rhetorics of the feminist self-help health movement: the public discourse of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and early nineteenth-century ideas about suffrage, sex, and race: the conflicts over lesbian sexuality in the 1960s and 1970s: and the discourse that surrounds twenty-first-century SlutWalks. In the process, Poirot rethinks the terms through which we understand U.S. feminist movements to explore the ways feminism has questioned sexed distinctions and practices over time.

Over the years LGBTQ+ activists have won several political victories, but this success sparked a backlash going beyond the role of the Christian right and the US borders. The authors show how the rhetoric of heteroactivists differs from that of their predecessors, exploiting notions of 'parental rights' and freedom of speech to assert heteronormative values in spaces ranging from schools to workplaces. They also reveal the increasingly transnational nature of anti-LGBTQ+ activism, with growing links between heteroactivists in the US, UK and beyond.

Storytellers break away from mainstream portrayals of gender diversity, cutting across lines of age, race, ethnicity, ability, class, religion, family, and relationships. From Suzi, who wonders whether she’ll ever “feel” like a woman after living fifty years as a man, to Aubri, who grew up in a cash-strapped fundamentalist household, to Sand, who must reconcile the dual roles of trans advocate and therapist, the writers’ conceptions of gender are inextricably intertwined with broader systemic issues.

- Description
- By analyzing the negotiation of femininities and masculinities within contemporary Hollywood cinema and by focusing on the largely neglected intersections between postfeminism and queer theory this volume presents diverse interrogations of popular cinema. The chapters in this collection position contemporary commercial production as a space where female empowerment is both celebrated and undermined, and signal the necessity of further debate surrounding the formation of gender identity in postmillennial Hollywood cinema.

- Description
- In the 1990s and early 2000s queer communities were still criminalized and the internet did not make its appearance in most of India. However, queer people grouped together to deal with different forms of stigma, discrimination and violence in different spheres of life. This book considers the mobilization of queer communities in the first decade of the movement in India and its impact on the lives of queer people in the long run. It draws on in-depth interviews with queer individuals and their allies as well as archival study of early queer support forums in eastern India.

- This book explores how the principles and practices of Ignatian pedagogy overlap and intersect with contemporary feminist theory in order to gain deeper insight into the complexities of today's multicultural educational contexts. Drawing on intersectionality, a method of inquiry that locates individual and collective standpoints in relation to social, political, and economic structures, the volume highlights points of convergence and divergence between Ignatian pedagogy, a five-hundred year old humanistic tradition, and more recent feminist theory in order to explore how educators might find strikingly similar methods that advocate common goals-including engaging with issues such as race, gender, diversity, and social justice.

- From early modernity to today, society has encountered forms of interpersonal violence. Through exploration of areas within Europe and Russia to Africa, America and Asia, this collection presents various forms of interpersonal violence in different times, places, institutional orders and relationships. The book demonstrates how the specificity of temporality and spatiality affect the manifestation of violence, how the dynamics of intersectional and institutional differences are located in social space and time and how the different forms of violence in different times are affectively, conceptually and discursively connected.

- This book investigates meanings associated with female head hair, problematising assumptions about its role and implications in the 21st Century. Authors reflect on the use of hair in popular culture, such as children’s television and pop album artwork, as well as in work by women artists. Studies examine the lived experiences of women from a range of backgrounds and histories, including curly-haired women in Israel, African American women and lesbians in France. Other essays interrogate the connotations of women’s head hair in relation to body image, religion and aging.
