- Description
- Women and men experience disaster differently, and their needs in the aftermath of disaster often differ. Bringing together perspectives from academics, emergency response specialists and development practitioners, the volume investigates to what extent and in what ways gender affects the course of post-disaster reconstruction. Conversely, it also explores in what ways gender politics may be altered by disaster and post-disaster reconstruction. The study includes: a comprehensive overview of key issues facing women and men, as gendered beings, in reconstruction and development: a targeted observation of specific South Asian disaster contexts: and a sustained discussion of case studies and their implications and lessons. Contents: 1. Introduction / Linda Racioppi: 2. Gender differential impacts of the 2004 tsunami / Chaman Pincha: 3. The interplay of women, work and disasters: missing women’s views / Mihir Bhatt: 4. Livelihoods re-examined: the distribution of fisheries-sector aid and its impact on women’s livelihoods in post-tsunami. Tamil Nadu, India / Julia Novak Colwell: 5. - Description
- The purpose of the study is to bring out often-neglected facts concerning dissimilarities in the lifestyles and consumption patterns of women and men, and thus in their environmental impact, by describing how men, primarily through their greater mobility and more extensive travel, account for more carbon dioxide emissions than women, in both rich and poor countries. The study points to how a changed behaviour among men – notably rich men who are decision-makers – can be crucial in addressing climate change and in enhancing the opportunities of all human beings to enjoy sustainable development.. .The study is an ideas paper presented at the 15PthP meeting of the UN Commission for Sustainable Development in May 2007.

- Description
- This introduction to gender aspects of climate change starts with a short history of the thinking and practice around gender and sustainable development over the past decades. Next it provides a theoretical framework for analyzing climate change manifestations and policies from the perspective of gender and human security. The actual and potential effects of climate change on gender equality and women's vulnerabilities are examined, both in rural and urban contexts. This is illustrated with a range of case studies from all over the world. The final section looks at how far gender mainstreaming in climate mitigation and adaptation has advanced, the policy frameworks in place and how to move from policy to effective action.

- Description
- In the examination of gender as a driving force in disasters, little attention has been paid to how women’s or men’s disaster experiences relate to the wider context of gender inequality, or how gender-just practice can help prevent disasters or address climate change at a structural level. This book explores disasters in diverse environmental, hazard, political and cultural contexts through original research and theoretical reflection, building on the orientation of critical men’s studies. This body of thought explores how men gain, maintain and use power to assert control over women. Table of Contents: Foreword / Kenneth Hewitt: Section 1: Critical men’s studies and disaster: 1. The Gendered Terrain of Disaster: Thinking About Men and Masculinities / Elaine Enarson and Bob Pease: 2.
