- Description
- This collection provides a theoretical approach to the study of how global norms influence social processes. It analyses the institutional and political processes whereby actors – be they local, national, regional or trans-national – engage with global norms of gender equality. Authors look at how context and history effect norm engagement and how particular groups and actors tend to be marginalised from discussions of global norms.

- Description
- Gender has traditionally proven to be a 'blind spot' for new institutionalists. This book emphasizes gender as a critical aspect of institutions and opens up new avenues to interrogate the dynamics of power and change. Focussing on the EU, where institutional efforts to realize gender equality are quite pronounced, the book interrogates attempts to bring about more 'gender just' states - supranationally, nationally, and more locally. The book takes a 'best case' scenario in order to illuminate how institutions and their gendering, help and hinder institutional change.

- Description
- Research on the diffusion of gender equality norms in and between the EU, South America and Southern Africa, especially the trajectories of norms on gender-based violence and gender mainstreaming of aid and trade. The authors explore the constant renegotiation of gender equality norms in the dynamics between transnational, national and (inter)regional actor constellations. They describe differences in the strengths of gender equality norms and differences between four regional institutions: the EU, Mercosur, Organization of American States (OAS) and Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The participants law professors and social scientists present detailed reports on domestic experiences and regulations in eight European countries Among the many issues raised are the following: positive action in theory and practice: the progress of the EU Commission s strategy to integrate equal opportunity into all Community policies and activities: the motives for promoting women in Academia: the extensive group of part-timers and fixed-term employees at the margin of the traditional academic career: the importance of creating a situation in Academia where woman excellence shows: and the development of marketable research disciplines embodied in private research institutes.

- Description
- This book explores the discursive constructions of gender equality and the implications of these understandings in a broad range of policy fields. Using gender equality as a prime example the authors offer a new vocabulary to identify and study processes of the reduction, amplification, shifting or freezing of meaning. The main aim of the book is to understand the dynamics and to reflect on the consequences of such discursive politics in recent policy making on gender equality. It explores both the potential opportunities that are opened up for the promotion of equality through discursive politics, and the limitations they impose. Different chapters cover a range of case studies in Europe, the USA, and the Asia region, tackling contemporary political debates on equality .

Part II contains expert essays on each of the Article 13 anti-discrimination grounds: sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age and sexual orientation, with common themes weaving throughout.

- Description
- The book is focused on intersectionality between gender, race and disability and the question of whether this intersection can be adequately addressed in (EU) law. The discussion rests on two basic assumptions. First, the multiplication of 'discrimination grounds' in EU law and other legal regimes should not result in a dilution of the demands of equality law. Accordingly, the book focuses on the three key grounds - race, gender and disability.. Second, any multi-ground non-discrimination law framework needs to engage with the question of discrimination on several grounds.
