- Description
- This report gives a picture of where women stand today and how they have progressed in the world of work over the last 20 years, and of the root causes of inequalities and how they should be tackled based on what works and the guidance provided by international labour standards. It shows that, despite some encouraging advances, major gender gaps at work remain. Increasing gender parity in educational attainment does not prevent women from being concentrated in middle to lower-paid occupations that reflect traditional gender stereotypes and beliefs about women’s and men’s aspirations and capabilities.

- Description
- 'The international community is increasingly aware of the negative impacts of child marriage on a wide range of development outcomes. Ending child marriage is now part of the Sustainable Development Goals. Yet investments to end the practice remain limited across the globe and more could be done. In order to inspire greater commitments towards ending child marriage, this study demonstrates the negative impacts of the practice and their associated economic costs. The study looks at five domains of impacts: (i) fertility and population growth: (ii) health, nutrition, and violence: (iii) educational attainment and learning: (iv) labor force participation and earnings: and (v) participation, decision-making, and investments. Economic costs associated with the impacts are estimated for several of the impacts. When taken together across countries, the costs of child marriage are very high. They suggest that investing to end child marriage is not only the right thing to do, but also makes sense economically.'

- Description
- 'This report looks at the state of inequality in health, answering key questions: according to the latest available data, what the status is of inequality across and within countries and how levels of health have changed in population subgroups over time. The objective of this report is to showcase best practices in reporting the state of inequality in low- and middle-income countries using high-quality data, sound and transparent analysis methods, and user-oriented, comprehensive reporting. This report encompasses the latest status of inequality and changes over time across 23 RMNCH indicators, disaggregated by four dimensions of inequality (economic status, education, place of residence and sex). It draws on data from 86 low-and middle-income countries from all world regions. In a subset of 42 low- and middle-income countries (where data availability permitted), it was also possible to assess how the extent of inequality had changed over time. The use of effective reporting practices helps to convey clear, salient messages about the state of inequality. Visualization technology facilitates the presentation and interpretation of large amounts of data, as results can be displayed using .interactive, customizable views.'

- Description
- ‘The Global Gender Gap Index is a framework for capturing the magnitude and scope of gender-based disparities and tracking their progress. The Index benchmarks national gender gaps on economic, political, education and health criteria, and provides country rankings that allow for effective comparisons across regions and income groups, and over time. The rankings are designed to create greater awareness among a global audience of the challenges posed by gender gaps and the opportunities created by reducing them. The methodology and quantitative analysis behind the rankings are intended to serve as a basis for designing effective measures for reducing gender gaps.’

- 'There are three basic concepts underlying the Global Gender Gap Index. First, it focuses on measuring gaps rather than levels. Second, it captures gaps in outcome variables rather than gaps in means or input variables. Third, it ranks countries according to gender equality rather than women’s empowerment. The Index is designed to measure gender-based gaps in access to resources and opportunities in individual countries rather than the actual levels of the available resources and opportunities in those countries.'

- Description
- 'The Little Data Book on Gender 2016 is a quick reference for users interested in gender statistics and presents sex-disaggregated data for more than 200 countries in a straightforward, country-by-country reference on education, health, access to economic opportunities, and public life and decision making. Summary pages that cover regional and income group aggregates are also included. .The report examined the driving forces behind differences in key aspects of welfare between men and women—education and health, access to economic opportunities and productive resources, and the ability to make .effective choices and take action. Gender equality is increasingly recognized as not only a core development objective, but smart economics. Over the past decades, countries have seen significant progress to raise living .standards and close gaps between males and females, including visible improvements in health and education. At the same time, critical gaps persist in economic opportunity as well as agency of women and girls. Addressing .gender inequalities requires continued efforts to overcome a complex set of interrelated challenges linking gaps in human capital and technology, women’s disproportionate responsibility for unpaid work, legal discrimination, .and gender-based violence.'

- Description
- In this special issue a move beyond aggregation, snapshots and easy labels to understand poverty more. The shortcomings of conventional analyses of poverty and the complexities involved in conceptualizing it in a more meaningful way is highlighted. Female-headed households clearly are disadvantaged in many countries. It is largely informed by the narrow way in which well-being is defined and statistics gathered in conventional poverty research, which also ignores the important dimension of agency that allows women heads to offset gender discrimination as well as the foregone income from a male partner. The extent to which risks for maternal mortality are unequally distributed among women from different socioeconomic backgrounds is highlighted. A research of household level data reveals that poverty and maternal mortality are strongly associated, highlighting the need to move beyond country averages when assessing development performance.

- Description
- Recent research on migration, gender and remittances show distinct and disparate behaviors and practices that raise a number of questions and suggest the need for a more complete theory of migration that incorporates notions of cultural dynamics as they relate to behavior and societal outcomes. Men save to take money home and women do not, instead investing in their new local environs and purchasing durable items. Although men and women are equally likely to migrate, women remit wages and gifts to their parents' home at a significantly higher rate, and are expected to do so. However, more recently there is some evidence that gendered remittance patterns are changing, where men are possibly remitting almost as much as women.

- arbeid, economische zelfstandigheid, inkomen, onderwijs, wereld
- Description
- The focus is on whether the tendency toward increased participation has continued more recently and whether women have found enough decent and productive jobs to really enable them to use their potential in the labour market and achieve economic independence. The approach is based on updates and analysis of a number of major labour market indicators. These include: labour force participation: unemployment: sector and status of employment: wages/earnings: and education and skills. Taken together, they show whether women who want to work actually do so, whether women find it harder to get a job than men, differences in the type of work done by women and men and equality of treatment in areas ranging from pay to education and training.
