- Description
- This book explores the extent to which gendered approaches are evident and effective in spatial development in selected European countries. Beginning with an introduction to theories and concepts of gender, space and development, the book includes a brief historical review of gender in spatial planning and development throughout Europe in general, and an overview of different national frameworks in European countries, comparing legal, organisational and cultural similarities and differences. This is followed by a reflection on how simplifications and stereotypes of gender concepts are used in the practice of spatial development. The main part of the book offers a transnational discussion of planning practices on selected thematic topics. It starts with gender-sensitivity in urban master planning and at neighbourhood level referring to different types of planning manuals. Furthermore, the book focuses on gender-sensitive evaluation in urban planning as well as international agendas for sustainable development as a framework for a new generation of gender equality policies.

- Description
- This collection is a scholarly study of the pervasiveness and significance of Roxolana (c. 1500–1558) in the European imagination. Roxolana, or ‘Hurrem Sultan’, was a sixteenth-century Ukrainian woman who made a career from harem slave and concubine to legal wife and advisor of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566). These essays represent an interdisciplinary survey of her legacy. The contributors investigate her image in a variety of sources, ranging from early modern historical chronicles, dramas and travel writings, to twentieth-century historical novels and plays. Also included are six European source texts featuring Roxolana, here translated into modern English. This collection examines Roxolana from both Western and Eastern European perspectives: source material is taken from England, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Poland, and Ukraine.

- Description
- This book investigates the gendered nature of political culture across early modern Europe by exploring the relationship between gender, power, and political authority and influence. The collection offers a rethinking of what constituted ‘politics’ and a reconsideration of how men and women operated as part of political culture. It demonstrates how underlying structures could enable or constrain political action, and how political power and influence could be exercised through social and cultural practices. Table of Contents: 1. ‘Introduction: Gender and Political Culture in Early Modern Europe’ / James Daybell and Svante Norrhem: 2. ‘Gender, Politics and Archives in Early Modern England’ / James Daybell: Diplomacy, Gifts and the Politics of Exchange: 3. ‘Material Culture as Power: Gendered Strategies of Power in an Early Modern Dynasty’ / Susan Broomhall and Jacqueline Van Gent: 4. ‘Diplomats and Kin Networks: Diplomatic Strategy and Gender 1648-1740’ / Svante Norrhem and Peter Lindström: Socio-Economic Structures, Gender and Politics: 5. ‘Female Agency in Favourable Political Circumstances Lady Ingerd Ottesdotter and the Benefits of Holding Crown Fiefs in Norway in the 1520s’ / Randi Bjørshol Wærdahl: 6. ‘Female Networks and Horizontal Families’ / Barbara J. - Description
- Responding to the insights of postcolonial and feminist theory, the authors show that medieval identities emerged through shifting paradigms, that fluidity, conflict, and contingency characterized not only gender but also sexuality, social status, and religion. This view emerges through essays that delve into a variety of cultures and draw on a range of disciplinary and theoretical appoaches. Contributors consider gendered hierarchies in western Christian, Jewish, Byzantine, and Islamic areas of the medieval world.
