- Description

- Description
- In this book, the author shows which important women writers Berlin produced between the 18th century and the present. After an introduction to the interplay between women and literature since antiquity, his Lexikon Berliner Writers gives an overview of the development of the female literary scene in this city and introduces around 130 women authors who have lived and worked here. Each of the alphabetically arranged entries describes in a short, concise way the life of the writer concerned and characterizes her literary work.

- Description
- This publication brings to light the work of a selection of German-speaking women journalists from the first half of the twentieth century who made significant contributions to German life and culture, yet are barely known today. The volume builds upon scholarship on women and culture by focusing on individual journalists who published both within and outside the periodicals of women's organizations and women's magazines. This volume closes with Erika Mann's autobiographical fragment ‘I, of all People'.

- Description
- This book examines the processes of cultural transfer between Britain and Germany during the Personal Union, the period from 1714 to 1837 when the kings of England were simultaneously Electors of Hanover. British and German reformists—feminists in particular—used the period's expanded pathways of cultural transfer to generate new discourses as well as to articulate new views of what personal freedom, national character, and international interaction might be. Johns traces four pivotal moments of cultural exchange: the expansion of the book trade, the rage for translation, the effect of revolution on intra-European travel and travel writing, and the impact of transatlantic journeys on visions of reform. Johns reveals the way in which what she terms “bluestocking transnationalism†spawned discourses of liberty and attempts at sociocultural reform during this period of enormous economic development, revolution, and war.
